| samuelperry's Full Review: NEC MobilePro 770 |
I have been involved with computers from the TRS-80 Model I in 1978 until the present. During this time I have owned countless machines. I must admit that buying a new computer now does not move me the way it used to - it is just a tool that I need. Well, all of that changed when my NEC Mobilepro 770 arrived last week. It has not been out my sight since!
Since I type about 80 wpm, I always use my computer keyboard rather than a pencil and paper. The idea of a palm-top simply did not interest me, but this NEC with a keyboard did. The first time I placed my fingers on this down-scaled set of keys, I was amazed at the comfort. I began typing immediately at a rapid speed with very little adaptation necessary. I had just found a truly portable machine on which I could do my word processing, take notes, memos, etc. Not only that, but to my delight the ROM contains a variety of software that permits me to maintain records, create spread sheets, store names and addresses, and record appointments. I will not even mention the solitare game or digital voice recorder.
The first day I had the machine, I wanted to see if I could actually get on the internet with such a small device. In just a matter of minutes, I had all of my necessary information keyed in. Plugging in a telephone jack, I was surfing the net in no time. It is great for checking my email and getting information. The crisp color back-lit screen does quite well displaying images and graphics. Forget about downloading though.
On the second day, I had to find out if I would be able to connect the NEC Mobilepro 770 to my notebook computer. After installing the software that comes with it on my notebook, I was copying files from one to the other in just a matter of minutes. The Windows CE Word program is very compatible with my office 98 WORD program which means I can upload documents and immediately print them without editing. I have bought many computers in my time and fought many a battle getting things to connect properly, but the NEC was a serious exception. IT'S JUST NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THIS EASY!
Did I mention the rechargable battery literally last the 10 hours as advertized and charged in about 4. I can use it all day on a single charge.
In sum, the excitement that I felt with my first TRS-80 back in 1978 has been rekindled with the NEC Mobilepro 770. Once again it is fun to work/play with a computer! And, I must admit, for the present it has become my primary computer. I'm sorry Mr. Desktop.
