Super Jersey or Super Junk?

Written: Jan 07 '07 (Updated Mar 02 '07)
Pros:Superbowl logo is a rare and nice touch. Well made and durable.
Cons:Numbers should be on sleeves, not shoulders. Rice is really known as a 49er.
The Bottom Line: I'd pass this one. It's well made for a Replica but my money would be better spent on an Authentic if I were buying a player of Rice's historic significance.

The 2002 NFL season ended with a Superbowl that pitted the Pirates against the Pirates (sort of). Raiders vs. Buccaneers was the game that year and most of the biggest stars were on the Raiders side of the ball.

Why a Jerry Rice jersey?
Rice was one of the biggest stars in this game. Nearing the end of a 20 year career, Rice was playing to add one more championship to his amazing resume. He'd won his other titles in San Francisco so this would have been his first for the other side of the Bay if he'd have one. Rice is a sure Hall of Famer and is generally considered a classy guy who is respected by fans. No disgrace with being seen in this guys jersey for any reason.

Why NFL Equipment?
In this case it's the only jersey you can buy. That's because this one is very special because it has the official logo of Superbowl XXXVII on the shoulder and only Reebok's NFL Equipment line was licensed to produce that.

That aside, Reebok is known for quality. Double stitching, jock tails, elastic side panels, and cloth nameplates are all hallmarks of this lineup of jerseys.

Why a Superbowl jersey?
It's very rare that a team makes it to the Superbowl. In the Raiders entire history they've only been to the Superbowl four times. Special events like this could be once in a lifetime for many fans so when they come fans often try to gather all the memorabilia they can before the moment is lost to the next season.

It's not fully accurate.
In a very un-Reebok like move the jersey was changed to not 100% reflect the jersey worn in the game. The numbers were moved to the shoulders instead of being placed on the sleeves where the Raiders actually worn them. This may not bother the casual fan but little things like that REALLY bother me!

This is a replica...
And it has the flaws that are typical of all replica jerseys. Replica jerseys like this one are the lowest in quality and price that are offered by the NFL (the other choices are typicall Authentic and EQT). Replicas normally go around $65 and feature a mesh body, dazzle yoke (aka shiny shoulders) and silk screened letters/numbers/logos. Silk screened letters and numbers are essentially an iron on transfers. These tend to crack, peel, and come off as the jersey ages and is laundered.

The Bottom Line:
For a Raiders die hard this is a must have. A fan like myself who is a casual Raiders supporter would likely be happier with a jersey that is obtained more easily at less cost. Not to mention that on others that are available the numbers are placed correctly!

Other jerseys:
If you are considering buying another Raiders jersey please check out a few more of my Epinions:
