Poached eggs are a necessity for breakfast sandwiches and that’s about the only reason we consider poached eggs. We’ve been searching awhile for an egg poacher and haven’t had any luck finding one. When we saw the Nordic Ware Microwave Egg Poacher at Target in the section with microwave ovens for only 1.99 we couldn’t say no.

The product is made of a microwave safe plastic. There bottom piece holds the eggs and the top part folds over to facilitate cooking and to avoid splatters. It's very lightweight and doesn't look like much but then it doesn't cost much either. There is a handle that sticks out which remains cool in the microwave so it can be removed without a pot holder.

The wrapper advertises perfect results every time which I have yet to achieve. It seems that you should bring home an extra carton of eggs for your cooking lesson.

The instructions indicate that one or two eggs can be poached in the microwave at a time. The first step is to place one egg into each cup and pierce the yolk with a fork. Add ½ teaspoon of water to each cup for a moist poach. Each microwave will be different so start with 15 second intervals. The lid should remain closed for an additional 30 seconds while the egg finishes cooking.

The timing is dependent on the wattage of the microwave. A rough estimate is 55-70 seconds for one egg. The advertisement on the box gives times for wattages however my microwave is significantly higher than the highest one mentioned on the poacher.

Clean Up is very simple. This item should be washed with warm soapy water or in the dishwasher. I find that it washes out with ease.

One of the benefits is that this is very quick and simple. If you’re not a morning person you may be delighted with this product because it is quick and ease to use. The egg is done in less time than a frying pan takes to warm up and it also cleans much faster than an egg cooked in a frying pan.

The item is also inexpensive. This item only runs $2 however fancy poachers can range up to $50.

The company also offers a 5 year warranty which indicates this is a very durable product.

The drawback that I see is that the perfect egg is difficult to achieve. Since I can’t see into the poacher it’s difficult to say if the egg is done or not.

Another problem is that it only makes up to two eggs at a time. Some people may find the need to make more eggs at once.

Another drawback is that this wouldn’t poach alternative eggs like Egg Beaters.

My results
I’m less than thrilled with the microwave poacher. I find that my eggs are either over done or under cooked which may be solved with more practice which I’m not willing to do. No matter how many times I poke them it sounds like a machine gun which leads to an unfortunate texture. I also dislike the shape of the final product. I find that the eggs are too rounded and the white part separate so the egg doesn’t fit nicely on the classic breakfast sandwich and the yellow separates from the whites when eating. It tastes gross and looks very unappetizing.

Overall
I think this is a great value for the money for only $2 and a 5 year warranty. The product works very quickly and can be loaded into the dishwasher. The biggest drawback for me is that the eggs taste nasty cooked in this microwave poacher.
