Former Brand New Heavy lead singer, N'Dea Davenport, who landmark work with that British jazz group helped usher in the era of retro soul worldwide. Her self-titled, first solo effort was not only up to par with her performances with the jazz group, this was/is her best work to date.
An under appreciated gem of a cd that didn't get the exposure that it truly deserved, from a young singer/songwriter/producer who still doesn't get the props she truly deserves, it is still in heavy rotation in my cd changer today, almost two years after it's 1998 release.
Davenport, who, in the BNH tradition, used REAL LIVE MUSICIANS(no boring synthesizers and drum machines for this diva)and displays a wide range of styles from the forceful yet passionate style that first gained her attention during her BNH stint on the opening track, WHATEVER YOU WANT, arguably the cd's best track; a smokey fire that recalls such 70's legends as Betty Wright and Phyllis Hyman on UNDERNEATH A RED MOON. On the track, NO NEVER AGAIN, a grooving techoish song, N'Dea displays yet another side of her versatility that could easily give Crystal Waters a run for her money. The haunting, self-explainatory REAL LIFE, Davenport gives voice to societies ills, tragic yet beautiful at the same time. On the cd's final track, the aptly-titled, GETAWAY, N'dea lets it all hang out and has fun with this track, that easily could have been a show stopper at Mardi Gras(New Orleans's renowned Rebirth Brass Band provided the music for GETAWAY, adding flavor to the party atmosphere of the song). The cd covers a wide variety of genres and N'dea refused to be roped in by any of them. The range and scope of her voice and her style has few rivals and with this cd, the proof that Davenport has grown tremendously from her years with the BRAND NEW HEAVIES is apparent.
