| Freak369's Full Review: N'Ice Lozenges Cherry 24 Per Package |
So, have you figured out what politicians, prostitutes and priests all have in common? If you guessed something sexual and perverse, chances are you arent wrong but I was referring to NIce Lozenge - the top pick of public speakers, chain smokers and those with oral fixations. Once youve graduated from Halls and Brothers theres only one cough drop or lozenge to take when nothing else seems to work, and thats NIce. They help to quiet a hacking cough, promote saliva production and make a sore throat feel a little better. The sweet candy-like cough drops are great when you have a small tickle but when you feel like you have battery acid ripping your throat apart, its time to break out the industrial throat aid.
NIce Cherry Lozenge
Each package of 24 lozenges comes packed in a somewhat sturdy cardboard box, but thats no matter because the lozenges are each individually sealed on blister cards six to a card for a total of three cards per pack. You can cut a few of them off the card and tuck them in your backpack or purse so youll always have them on hand and the blister packaging keeps them clean, fresh and ready to go. Ive used these for a number of years and have to say that they are one of the few throat soothers that actually tackle the problem and give your relief for more than 30 45 minutes. This wont sure the common cold or rid you or a hacking cough, but it will allow you to get some rest just dont fall asleep with it in your mouth [personal experience talking here] or you might just wake up choking and in a worse state then when in initially took it.
When I take these for a sore throat I generally get relief in about ten minutes. This usually lasts about two to three hours depending on if I am drinking a lot of water or hot tea with it. When consuming a lot of liquids, you may need to take one of these every few hours but please read the warnings on the box. The backs of the blister packs all have the NIce logo on them so if they do become separated from the box, they are still easily identifiable. Generally, these take about ten minutes to dissolve completely and unless you have great teeth resist the urge to bite into them or you might just loosen a filling. Even though they are sugar free, you might want to brush your teeth after using these to remove the artificial sweetener [sorbitol] since this will harm teeth over time.
Flavor
The cherry flavor is my personal favorite but these arent like pieces of candy so if you are expecting something sweet, you might be disappointed. They dont have the harsh tongue burning sensation that Halls have but the first few times you use them you might be a little overwhelmed by the flavor. If cherry isnt your thing, you can also pick these up in lemon and grape but all of the flavors arent available in all locations. The lemon ones are a bit too citrusy for me but the grape are indeed tasty. I am not sure the grape ones are made any more since I havent seen them when I was looking for them. At one point in time there were samples of NIce Lozenges packaged with other products from Heritage Brands / Insight Pharmaceuticals but these are usually during the winter months when coughs and colds are at their peak.
Price
You can find the 24 count boxes for about $2.50 at places like Target and Wal-Mart. Oddly enough, drug and grocery stores charge about a dollar more for these so pick them up when they are on sale or coupons are offered. These usually have a shelf life of about a year but each box has the expiration date stamped on the side. If you do catch them on sale, check the boxes that have the furthest expiration date so you can stock up. Are they worth the price? I think that they are but some people might not care for a few of the flavors. You can find these in smaller sized assortments but if youve never tried them, check the travel or sample section of your store to see if they have them in a four pack.
Directions
You can use these to sooth a cough, when you have a cold and need throat relief or from bronchial irritation. You can use these every two hours without exceeding ten per day. The manufacturer states that using more than the recommended dosage may have a laxative effect [mostly the sorbitol]. Bot for use by children under the age of six unless recommended by a doctor but I cant see most kids liking the flavor anyway. Since these are in a blister pack, keep them away from children since they will find a way to pop them out of the pack. It would take more than a few of these to make a child sick, but there is a real choking hazard since they are hard and not exactly the easiest to bite in to. Use as you would any other lozenge, dissolve in your mouth and repeat as needed.
Ingredients
The main ingredient in this product is menthol, which acts as an oral anesthetic and cough suppressor as the lozenge dissolves. Some people who are sensitive to menthol may experience a mouth numbing sensation that lasts about an hour, if this happens to you, try only sucking on it until it dissolves about half way. Inert ingredients include FD&C blue 1 and red 40, assorted flavorings, sorbitol and tartaric acid. If you are a diabetic, please consult a physician before using these, just because they are sugar free does not mean that they are automatically approved for use by diabetics.
The Bottom Line
These are one of the few adult cough drops / lozenges that really seems to work for me. If you are looking for something to temporarily aid in sore throat pain, a flu related cough or just dry mouth and dont want something that tastes like candy check out NIce. If you are having trouble locating these, you can call their customer service number at [800] 344-7239 for assistance in locating a store near you.
