I don't like to eat a lot of sugar, but that doesn't mean that I have to give up snacking altogether. There are plenty of sugar-free snacks out there, but some are definitely better than others. As I love lemon-flavored snacks, I decided to try SnackWell's Sugar-Free Lemon Cream cookies.
The 6.5 oz. box contains 30 cookies, neatly stacked in a two-column tray. Each cookie is approximately 1.5" diameter, and consists of two wafers, with yellow, lemon-flavored cream sandwiched between them. The picture on the box makes it seem like the cream extends all way to the edges of the cookie. This is completely false. Twisting open the cookie, we see a very small, thin circle of cream approximately 1" diameter. That's my first complaint about this cookie - not nearly enough cream. Everyone knows the best part of the sandwich cookie is the cream - I don't want any skimping!
But how does it taste? Well, the wafer, itself, is plain. It's not lemon-flavored from what I can tell. It's sweet, with a pleasant taste, but definitely not lemon. The cream smells a bit like lemon, but the actual flavor bears only the slightest resemblance to lemon. If my eyes were closed and someone gave me this cookie, I'm not sure I'd identify it as lemon-flavored. I would say it's a sweet cookie with a pleasant flavor, but be hard-pressed to identify it as lemon. That's complaint number two for this cookie. If you're going to make something lemon-flavored, make it taste like lemon!
What makes it so sweet? Polydextrose, sucralose, and aspartame. As with any food made with sugar substitutes, some people will experience gastric distress. You should start out with low doses until you know how your system will react. I can eat three of these cookies with no problem, but I wouldn't dare eat more.
Three cookies are considered a serving, which contains 130 calories, 6g of fat, 130mg of sodium, 23g of carb, 2g of fiber, and of course, 0g of sugar (but 8g of sugar alcohol). As you can see, this is definitely not a reduced calorie food.
As this cookie is relatively high in calories and fat, and doesn't really taste like lemon, I will have to pass on them in the future.
