What is a shortbread cookie?
The traditional shortbread cookie is made with butter (lots of it), sugar (lots of it), eggs, and flour. You end up with a thick, rich, melt-in-your mouth cookie. While some recipes include fancy ingredients like cinnamon, chocolate, mint or shredded coconut, the "real" shortbread cookie is made plain. When it's made correctly, it's delicious as it is, without the extra ingredients.
But what should someone do, if they can't (or simply don't) eat sugar? Give up on this delicious treat? No way! Because now Snack Wells makes a sugar-free shortbread cookie - and it is amazing!
30 cookies come in the 7 oz. box. The cookies are neatly stacked in a two-column plastic tray. Each cookie is quite large. They're oval, over 2" across, and just under 2" tall. They are also a full quarter inch thick. This is a hefty cookie, for sure. They're also pretty! The top of each cookie is stamped with a picture that looks sort of like a fancy flower.
3 cookies make a serving, which contains 130 calories, 6g of fat, 150mg of sodium, and 2g of fiber. There are 0g of sugar (but 4g of sugar alcohol). Note that this is not a diet food. Some people mistake "sugar-free" for "low cal and/or low fat". This is usually not the case, and is definitely not the case here.
What makes them so sweet? Maltitol and sucralose. Like any food with these sweeteners, you should start out with low doses until you're sure how your system will react to them.
So how do these taste?
These are unbelievably, incredibly tasty. Normally my attitude when it comes to cookies is, "plain equals boring". But these cookies are one very large exception. These "plain" cookies are so rich and smooth and buttery that they seem to just melt in your mouth. My husband and I don't agree on much when it comes to desserts, but this is one case where we both give them very eager thumbs up.
