iowamommy's Full Review: Nanipoos Fitted Cloth Diapers
After using cloth diapers for the past six months for my daughter, I have built up quite a collection of brands, most made by WAHMs (work-at-home moms). With all the diapers in my collection, I probably didn’t need to try a Nanipoo diaper, but when I found out she offered a velour inner lining for a small additional charge plus she would soon be offering snap closures, I couldn’t resist.
What are Nanipoo’s diapers like?
These are fitted cloth diapers. Much different than the old method of folding and pinning diapers, these diapers are shaped like a disposable diaper and you fasten them by either Aplix (a washable, soft and durable type of Velcro) or snaps. A diaper cover is placed over the diaper to contain the wetness.
At the time of my order, the owner, Shannon, was just experimenting with making snap closing diapers instead of just the Aplix ones. Preferring snaps, I told her I’d be willing to wait longer for my order while she perfected the placement of the snaps.
You are able to pick your outer fabric (the print) in either flannel or a cotton woven material. I chose the spring plaid flannel. Your inner layer is up to you. They are regularly made with flannel, but for a small increase in price ($1.00) you can pick velour or sherpa, which is like a brushed terry, on the layer next to baby’s skin.
She uses super flannel in the body of the diaper, and the enclosed soaker is made from towel terry and super flannel to increase absorbency.
My order also had a doubler (additional charge of $2.00), which is a thick pad of fabric that you place inside the diaper to soak up more wetness.
Shannon includes a size chart on her website, ranging from newborn to extra large. Prices range from $5.50 to $10.00, depending on the size. Her website order form is easy to navigate, letting you select extras like doublers and a more plush lining, with drop down menus.
Our experience
When I received my Nanipoo diaper, I was pleased with the workmanship. The diaper is turned and topstitched for a neat look. The doubler is topstitched with a wavy line of stitches that offers a cute touch. The doubler has a long length, which is a plus.
My diaper is a side snap diaper, which means it snaps towards the sides of the hips rather than across the tummy. The front panel snaps on top of the side “wings” that normally wrap around the front (such as a disposable diaper does). There are two snaps to fasten on each side; one at the waist and one at the thigh. She included four snap sockets at each location to customize the fit. The backs of these snaps are inside the diaper, not all the way through to the inside layer, so there are no snaps touching baby’s skin.
The side snap diapers are cute, plus if your baby is wiggly and flipping over on her tummy, these are easier to fasten when baby is bottom-side up, which is the position my daughter usually ends up in during her change. Instead of aiming for under the tummy, you can fasten the snaps on the sides, where they are easier to see.
Favorite things
• Substantial feel to it. No shifting or bunching of any layers is to be found. The velour adds a wonderful soft, thick layer next to my daughter’s skin.
• Great absorbency. The thickness of the diaper when used with the doubler makes this a great diaper for naptime or times when absorbency counts.
• Elastic hugs just right! The fit almost feels custom made for her. There is elastic in the legs, back waistline and also the front waistline, and it has just the right amount of stretch to it to be effective without digging into her skin.
• Durable. Wash after wash, it keeps its shape with just some pilling of the flannel to be found, which is normal for any flannel diaper. If pilling bothers you, she has a selection of woven cotton outers to choose from.
• Excellent customer service!
Recommendation
I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another Nanipoo. I can only speak for the type I chose (velour lined, side snap with extra doubler) but I would guess her quality would be consistent in all products. This diaper is one of the first I reach for when they come out of the dryer (by the way, the drying time on this diaper is a bit on the longer side, but the absorbency and cushy feel make it worth it to me).
My diaper was $12.00 plus shipping:
• Large diaper at $ 9.00
• Velour inner $ 1.00
• Doubler $ 2.00
