| Saxguy's Full Review: Nashbar Crochet Cycling Glove |
I've been using the Nashbar Crochet Gloves for about 2 years now. They are my half-finger glove of choice, delivering great functionality at a great price.
Through the summer, I've been riding 3-5 times per week, rides of 10-15 miles, although I've gone up to 35 on Sunday rides. Included is a weekly casual Friday commute of 10 miles each way.
This gloves is made of a cotton mesh back, leather palm front, foam pad with stitches through the pad to keep the pad from moving, and a velcro closure. Weight for the large size is 66 grams.
Bicycle gloves provide two basic functionalities: shock absorption and dependable grip. Anything more is a bonus. This glove does well at both and has additional features.
The shock absorption is provided through a foam pad. It feels like it's about an eighth of an inch, but it's enough for me to dissipate the front handlebar (on my road bike) vibrations. The leather palm provides a good grip, and has maintained the grip under rainy conditions. The grip is important, not only for steering, but also for braking and shifting.
The additional features provided are:
Ventilation The mesh on the back provide a level of coolness on warmer days and provides a way for the hand to breath slightly.
Terrycloth thumbA feature found on more expensive gloves, it permits you to wipe the sweat from your face. I appreciate that very much, since I wear a helmet, and there's not that much facial room available. Use of a towel while moving is possible but wiping with the thumb is much easier in the fly.
Style The gloves come in Black, Blue, Green (a forest green that matches my hybrid Specialized Cross-Roads) and Natural, which is a tan color.
Custom fit provided by the standard velcro closure.
The gloves come in unisex sizes: S, M, L, XL. I have both L and XL. The L is a little tight. The XL is a little roomy before I close the velcro, although it is comfortable once closed. The roominess is an advantage in spring and fall because of:
Possible Three-season Functionality With the slight roominess in the XL size, I am able to wear my Nashbar full finger liner gloves underneath, giving me the ability to ride comfortably in weather conditions from about 35-50 degrees.
I use these gloves when I ride my Cross-Roads and when I ride my recumbent bike. On a 'bent, shock is not transmitted through the palms, but grip is still very important.
The one con is that the leather palm has gotten discolored in spots permanently after it has gotten wet. For me, that's no big deal.
These gloves are readily available at Nashbar.com for $9.99, a tremendous value. I recommend them highly.
Thanks for reading. God bless!
