Pros: Can apply this outdoors without having to bring them and the smell indoors
Cons: while it helps it is far from a "miracle"
Our dog Riley has been skunked twice. The first time I had not heard of Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. I have used Natures Miracle products for other applications in the house but did not realize they made one for skunks.
What we tried first and in the past
That first time I just washed him and washed him with a peroxide and baking soda recipe that the vet gave me...that did not work that well but it did help. Generally time got rid of the smell.
This time (Last Summer) Riley got it mainly in the neck region. The night it happened I bathed him for about an hour straight with various concoctions leaving him still stinking ripe with skunk.
The next morning I took him for a walk trying to air him out some and met with a neighbor who had recently had a similar experience. She had an extra bottle of the Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Remover and ran home to give it to me to try. Most of my neighbors with dogs had been through this at some point.
My experience with Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Remover
So home we went and I dousing him in the Natures Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. You are supposed to let them air dry to give the product a chance to neutralize the odor.... Trying to let him air dry without rubbing all over was quite a trick. I wrapped him in a towel so he would lay still. It is not easy to get your dog to lay still when they are wet. When I applied it at first the smell because stronger and after it dried it was somewhat less but honestly it was far from gone. We repeating this treatment along with frequent baths, and in the end like last time, it just took time for it to disappear completely.
From what i have read the skunk odor gets into their pores so no matter what you do you can not get it all out. When they sweat they activate the scent again so until enough time has passed whenever they become damp you will start to smell the skunk again. Even when I would bathe him it would come out from the dampness of bathing.
How well it worked
I would have to say that although this product was not completely worthless for the skunk odor I would not give it a high mark. Also I believe that they market the regular natures miracle as natures miracle skunk odor remover and charge more for it. The ingredients are identical, and it smells like the same stuff I use on my carpet. It works great on the carpet by the way.
I did soak my dogs leash and collar in the stuff and again it took time but after about 5 applications the smell was gone.
Cost / Value / Will I buy it again?
I am hoping to never have to deal with skunk again but if I do, while I might try the natures miracle that I have on hand it is doubtful that I will use the one specific for skunk since it is basically identical and the regular natures miracle is cheaper. For a 32oz container I paid $9.99 at the pet store. The same size of regular natures miracle was 6.99. I think they know you are desperate and will pay anything when your pet is skunked so that is how they get away with charging more for the same thing.
I gave it three stars since it is not a miracle but would still recommend it to have on hand because when your dog get skunked you need all the tools you can get. This is nice in a way because you can put this on them outside to start with since no rinsing is required. I would suggest getting the regular natures miracle though and save yourself a few bucks.
Water, isopropyl alcohol, nature's enzymes, natural citrus scent. (note identical ingredients to regular natures miracle just a reversal in order of first two)
