My dog escaped the other day with her 10 week old puppy in tow. I frantically called the dog catcher and the police department to see if anyone had seen two dogs running free, they are Pitbulls and I was sure if anyone saw them roaming free, the first thing they would do is run for safety and call animal control or worse yet, grab their shotguns. The people around here aren't very open minded about Pitbulls the majority of our neighbors own Golden Retrievers.

Anyway, Since no one had seen them and they had been gone for well over 4 hours we assumed that they had went to explore the woods which worried me a lot more because I was sure that the puppy wouldn't be able to keep up with her mother and since the woods around our house are so dense, we would never be able to go in looking for her. When midnight hit, we gave up calling for them and prayed they would return safely.

At three in the morning, our canines returned home, wet, tired and hungry. How the little one made it back I'll never know. It didn't take me long to realize that my assumptions were right and that they had went on a little doggie adventure through the woods. They had apparently tried to play with a skunk that wasn't in the mood to play because they stank! Even the puppy was covered in head to toe.

There are not many places open around here at three in the morning so we had to settle with a tomato juice and vinegar bath. Giving two dogs a bath with a garden hose was not easy let alone trying to pour vinegar on them and tomato juice without getting it into their eyes. It was a difficult task and after it was over it was apparent that it was not working, now the dogs smelled like a pickled skunk. We gave it a rest for the night and let the dogs into the house knowing that most of our furniture would end up being ruined.

The next morning I went to our local pet store and found Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. I spent almost $8.00 for it but after what I spent for vinegar and tomato juice it was worth it. It was so easy to apply. Spray it on them and voila! You are done. I sprayed the furniture they had slept on and the rug and the smell was gone. I was thrilled.

No late night hose baths, no holding down wet, fighting animals. The best thing is that the spray really doesn't have it's own scent, it just neutralizes the odor which is great because some products just try to cover up the smell with something more pleasant. It was also safe enough for the puppy's skin which was a big concern for me with the vinegar. I will definitely keep this product on hand for the next time the dogs have a rendevous with a skunk.
