There is nothing worse than having a dog with allergies or skin problems. This holds especially true when the dog in question is your trusty service dog serving faithfully as a loyal assistant replacing a body part that does not function well or at all. Healthy coat and skin problems are what led me to discovering Natures Recipe Healthy Coat Formula with venison meal and rice. The dog food I was feeding my dog was not working well enough. Since changing over to Natures Recipe, the problems reduced considerably.
Outside allergens tend to cause problems for dogs and these problems show up in the coat, feces, and behavior. It is often difficult to determine the cause. It requires one to sit down and think about everything the dog eats and drinks, where they sleep, which grooming products one uses, and what products one uses in the home or the yard where the dog in question frequents. It is a long process. A veterinarian visit often helps discover the root problem but even with veterinarian care, the solution boils down to a series of trials with many errors until the solution presents itself.
We dealt with the flea problem with my first service dog so this was less of a problem this time other than finding out the new service dog also had an allergy to fleas. See my review of Bayer Advantage for more information regarding the best flea treatment available.
The problem we faced a different problem this time. All dogs are different so it made sense that the food my previous service dog ate did not work for my new dog. It took some trial and error but we finally found the right food.
It is important to read labels of dog foods. Do your research thoroughly. More often than one can imagine, dog foods contain high amounts of filler that do nothing more than add weight and make dogs sick because the quality ingredients to maintain good health are not included. The first three ingredients listed on any dog food need to be quality food, real food, not fillers or by-products. Also, there is always the case, as was mine, that food that works for one dog does not always work for another.
Natures Recipe Healthy Skin with Venison Meal and Rice was the answer to our problems. This particular formula did not include beef, corn, or wheat, which are the ingredients that caused him problems. He did not need them in his diet. Many animal professionals agree that over time, common ingredients even those such as beef, corn, or wheat, can cause a problem with intolerance. This seems to be what happened to my dog. The makers of Natures Recipe created a formula specifically for canines with this type of intolerance. They managed to create a formula that removed the ingredients causing problems while maintaining the necessary nutritional values to keep the dogs healthy and help return the coat and skin back to its former shine and shimmer.
The makers of Natures Recipe offer all their pet foods in a dry form and wet/canned form. In addition, the company provides treats in the same formula as the food in order to allow the animal the chance to enjoy a treat without causing dietary problems from eating a different formula not specifically designed for their condition. I do not know of many pet food companies that go to such lengths to keep animals and animal lovers happy.
I am listing the ingredients for the Natures Recipe Healthy Skin Formula (Venison Meal and Rice) below:
Ingredients:
Venison meal, ground rice, oatmeal, pearled barley, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), pea protein, animal digest, potassium chloride, minerals (zinc proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc oxide, iron proteinate, copper sulfate, copper proteinate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), yeast culture, vitamins (vitamin E supplement, L-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), inositol, niacin supplement, vitamin A supplement, d-calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate, beta-carotene, riboflavin supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride, menadione sodium bisulfite complex, vitamin D3 supplement, folic acid, biotin, vitamin B12 supplement), choline chloride, yucca schidigera, and rosemary extract.
Natures Recipe contains no added sugars.
The high quality venison meal, vegetable protein sources, and digestible grains provide amino acids necessary for maintaining muscles and the immune system.
Antioxidants such as Vitamin E, Beta-Carotene, and Selenium help to protect fats, proteins, and other materials in the body from harmful effects of free radicals.
Minimum proteinates like copper and zinc provide highly digestible sources of nutrients that are essential for healthy coat and skin. In addition, these nutrients are instrumental in repairing the coat and skin back to a healthy state.
Natures Recipe contains added vitamins and minerals without artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors. This promotes health, beauty, and vitality while avoiding the ingredients that should not be included in the canine diet.

The ingredients found in Natures Recipe Healthy Skin and Coat formula proves it is the dog food with "All of the Good and None of the Bad."
Unlike dog foods like Science Diet and others, Natures Recipe does not cost the owner a small fortune. The company understands that animals are a part of the family but even so, the family has to survive in order to keep the animal in question. The makers of Natures Recipe keep their pet foods, including the specialty formulas within an affordable price range. The foods do not stop with dogs. Natures Recipe makes wonderful cat foods and cat treats as well. The ingredients are equally nutritious.
In case anyone is curious, I had no problems changing my dog over from his previous dog food to Natures Recipe. I always make certain to change the food over slowly since sudden food changes cause problems like food refusal and can cause stomach upset. My dog actually wanted more of the Natures Recipe sooner than I was willing to change his food. He sniffed the bag so often that I had to move it to a different area out of his reach until I could remove the previous food from the dog food bin and refill it with the new dog food.
The Natures Recipe dog food works well as a training treat. I often keep a little baggie of NR dog food in my pocket for a special treat and I keep a bit in my dogs treat-holder training bag. He loves it.
Healthy Coat and Skin formula comes in medium sized bites. I would say it is about the same size as Iams mini chunks. The decent size makes this an idea food for large and small dogs.
The Natures Recipe brand offers a variety of formulas for various ages, health situations, and body sizes. I am sure each will work as well as the Healthy Skin formula works for us.
