mrisch's Full Review: Natures Miracle Natures Miracle Stain and Odor Rem...
I got Sparky The Dog from the pound at the ripe old age of six months (him, not me). I don’t know where he came from, but luckily, he was housebroken. Imagine my pleasant surprise when he could hold it in all day before I got a doggie door.
“What?” you ask. “What is this review about if Sparky The Dog was housetrained?” Ah - you are a step a ahead of me. Indeed, I didn’t squirt this stuff out of the blue.
So here we get to the heart of the story, the day I bought the doggie door. I just assumed that Sparky The Dog would go through the flapper thingie (a technical term) and do his business just like always. He, apparently, was either confused or had other plans. We got home from dog training that night (ironic, isn’t it?) and I sat down on the couch. (This was before I found epinions, so I must have had some free time or something).
Sparky looked at me. I looked at him. I thought we had a moment. He didn’t tell me what he was thinking. We looked. We waited. Apparently, he got the message that I wasn’t going to open the door for him to go into the backyard. So, he decided to relieve himself right then and there. No meek look. No hiding. No moving to a far off corner. Nope. Instead, right there, in the middle of the room, looking right at me, Sparky got comfortable again.
Of course, I wasn’t looking at him - I was watching TV. So, it wasn’t until I heard a pouring noise some ten seconds later that I realized what had happened. I quickly shooed Sparky out the door, where he finished up.
So, that was the long windup - now we get to the punch line. What was I going to do about the puddle in the middle of my living room? If I just let it dry, it would stink, stain, and encourage Sparky to return to the scene of the crime.
Luckily, I carefully read my Humane Society papers, and it mentioned enzyme cleaners. So, I ran out to the closest pet store and asked for one. They had one and only one enzyme cleaner (one reason I don’t shop there any more - what kind of pet store doesn’t have a selection of perhaps the most important pet accessory you can get?). That cleaner was Nature’s Miracle cleaner.
What is an enzyme cleaner?
One problem with pet stains is that they leave a lingering odor that may not even be detectible to humans. They also leave stains. Common cleaning solutions just don’t get the job done.
In step enzyme cleaners. These cleaners (and Nature’s Miracle purports to do this) have special enzymes that break down the proteins in the pet mess into a form that is no longer recognizable. This allows them fully remove the mess and avoid the problems described above.
How do you use it?
There are many ways to use Nature’s Miracle, which are on the directions. The way I used it for the puddle was to first soak up excess liquid with some rags. I then poured the cleaner onto the area. You must pour enough to soak the carpet all the way down and into the pad to get everything out. Then you are supposed to let it dry, and by that time the enzymes have worked and eliminated the mess.
My experience
So, I poured it, and it took basically the whole $4 bottle to soak the entire area (it is a different consistency than urine, so you can tell). I thought it took a whole lot - this ought to keep the company in business for a while.
I let it sit for 5 or 6 days - it never dried. One thing was for sure, the smell had not gone away (though I had to get my nose pretty close to tell - yuck). Another thing was for sure, the area was discolored. Maybe I over soaked it.
Finally, it was pretty dry. One thing was for sure, the smell had not gone away (though I had to get my nose pretty close to tell - yuck). Another thing was for sure, the area was discolored. Maybe I under soaked it.
Now, I don’t want to tell you it didn’t work, but it didn’t seem to work.
Finally, I got frustrated, and used my new Bissell Steam Cleaner (see my review!) and went over the area about a million times, and the discoloration and smell disappeared.
The lesson
I think there probably is value in the Nature’s Miracle product, especially for tiny dog mess (Sparky is a big boy, but he’s a good boy). I think there may have even been value for me in the long run, if I were patient. I also think there was value for me in combination with the steam cleaner after a long soak. Nonetheless, for the price of this stuff, I couldn’t tell if it worked at all.
The good news is that this was the one and only time Sparky ever went in the house (thus far). I hope it stays that way.
