I have always wondered why the manufacturers of dumbbells never came up with a way to make the changing of weights process a little bit easier. It seems as if they all use the process of using a clamp or some sort of bolt. Both work great at keeping the weight where it is supposed to be, but will drive you nuts when you are adding or subtracting weights. Each time you want to change the weight you have to remove the clamps or bolts and then change the weight and then put the clamp or bolt back on. Talk about an annoying process and one that takes up way too much time.
There had to be a better way and it turns out there is. Nautilus- not a company anyone would consider to be groundbreaking when it comes to design- has designed a system that removes much of the time and effort spent with this process. Basically, the system leaves you with what could almost be described as an entire set of dumbbells.
So, how does it work? Well, the system comes on a base unit and then contains the weights and the bar. The system is sold in pairs so the price that you see is for two sets of weights. At that point the handle or bar is inserted into the weights and you dial in the amount of weight that you want to lift. The locking mechanism works once it is locked in and you are on your way. There are no bolts or clamps to worrry about!
A couple of other positives that are different from what you are accustomed to. First, the locking mechanism prevents the plates from being used or moved unless the handle is inserted. The benefit is that you remove the likelyhood of dropped plates. Secondly, the plates are a molded plastic that will not clank when the plates touch each other. A nice benefit when trying not to annoy your significant other. Thirdly, you do not need a lot of room for these weights since you do not need a stand. Finally, the cover also will keep the system from rusting.
The system is also quite adaptable. The weights adjust in 2.5 pound increments until they reach 25 pounds. At that point they adjust in five pound increments. Hence, the system can be used by beginners and fairly serious weightlifters.
The one problem that I have with the system is the price. You think of the Crossbow and other gym systems that run close to or more than $1000.00 and you figure that something like this cannot run you more than a $150.00. Wrong. The system will run you around $350.00. That hurts almost as dropping a plate on your foot.
I have used the SelectTech system since the holidays and find it to be so much better than the clamp weight versions that I was using previously. The system is so easy to use and fast that you will find that the time you actually lift when working out can increase since you are not spending so much time changing the plates. The system takes no time to figure out and really is adaptable to the beginner and experienced lifter. I highly recommend the Nautilus SelectTech Dumbbell system and wonder why I never thought of it.
