boobynez's Full Review: Neat Receipts SCANALIZERâ„¢ Pass-Through Scanner
As a hopeless receipt piler, I am always screwed at tax time, and berated and charged heavily by my attorney. I have tried programs like PaperPort and OmniPage in the past, but they never did a good job of pulling information off the documents- and they tended to be hard to use and set up.
I was excited to give Neat Receipts a try, since it appeared to be dumbed down version of other database possibilities. (ie: heavily advertised next to the barf bags on every domestic flight I've been on in the last five years). Anyway, I saw it at Costco for a decent price, so I thought " Why not? " Unfortunately, for me it has a bit of a false promise.
I am finding the portable scanner to be most frustrating and slow- but I like the software- is it possible to use my own xerox scanner instead of the NeatReceipts scanner? (I tried going to the "Select Scanner" tab, but only the NR usb scanner shows up- I don't see any means of searching for additional hardware...) Is there a way? If there is not, I think I am going to seek a different product, because I have too many receipts to spend the time required with the portable scanner.
I have asked the customer service this question. They have a pretty good website for the more common problems, but nothing about using different scanners. And, of course, the program itself is some what limited (i tunes style) in what you can do to custom configure. Either it's there or it isn't. But I could be wrong...
