The Bottom Line: Neat receipts/works is to documents (paper, pdfs, etc.) as Ipod is to music. They have the full software and hardware integrated solution.

I bought neat receipts for my Mac last year on their version 1 platform. They have continually improved the software, which was already quite good when I bought it. They just released NeatWorks 2.0 for the Mac and I downloaded it, again they have added nice useful features and made scanning and viewing of documents faster. They seem to be a well run company that is growing.
I have considered scanning documents in the past but it always seemed to hard or clunky. This software makes it a breeze. Also appreciated is the feature that it adds "print to Neat Receipts" to the print menu on Macs. Using this option you can trivially add email, web receipts, web pages, etc. as pdf files (so they are nice and tiny) directly into the program.
The software has an excellent algorithm for converting scans to black and white. It is not a simple function as it does much better background suppression than any other image program I have used before. I often do drawings on paper and then scan them into my computer for permanent storage. If you want to do this too, then write on blank white paper (not ruled) and the software does an amazing job and blanking the background to white and creating extremely small file sizes.
If you are uncertain as to whether it is worth it save receipts etc. on your computer, just consider how nice it is to have all your tax documents, receipts, health care spending accounts, immunization records, etc. In another form that you can then easily back up using any of the miriad of online backup systems. Much better than a fire safe in the house.
