I've battled ear, sinus, and respiratory problems ever since I can remember. (My mother still loves to tell stories on what a sick little baby I was.) So, when I got a bad case of the flu (I don't remember exactly which year), my mother doped me up on some Ny-Quil and some of this nasal spray.
Sure, the spray worked very quickly and helped me rest and sleep a lot easier than before; however, I started noticing that even I got over my illness I couldn't breathe. I was in middle school at the time and knew enough to read the warnings and knew I wasn't supposed to take this medicine more than a few days. But when I asked my mother what to do, she just told me to keep using the nasal spray if it helped.
Well, weeks turned into months and months turned into years. I found myself having to use this nasal spray up to three times a day in order to breathe. I can remember the fear in high school that I might have forgotten my spray at home and be forced to go through an entire day stuffed up, blowing my nose constantly, and talking like a freak. I also remember being extremely embarrassed and hiding my little habit from anyone not in my immediate family.
In the end, I was fortunate enough to be forced to stay over at a friend's house without my spray. (But by this time, I had used it over TEN YEARS!) Miraculously enough though, even after I returned home, I never picked up this nasal spray again - something I never thought possible. Now when I get the occasional stuffy nose with cold, I do the smart thing : suffer silently for a few days and the 4-Way stay on the local Wal-Mart shelf.
