| Freak369's Full Review: Neopet Collectible Figurine - Chomby |
I guess if you read any of my Playmobil or Neopets reviews you know I am into collecting strange things. When I saw the little Neopet Collectible Figurines at Wal-Mart for $2.00 I decided to grab a few of them to put on top of my computer monitor. I really wanted to Shoyru but they were out of them at the time - after all, they were on sale and going pretty fast. I wasnt expecting that much from this figure when I purchased it, it is on the small side and the packaging lead me to believe that it was, well, a little on the cheap side. After fighting with the container that it came in for about three minutes [there is a lot of tape on these suckers] I finally got it opened and was really impressed with it. The Chomby isnt my favorite out of the all the Neopet characters but I do have to admit, this little guy is pretty freakin cute!
Neopet Collectible Figurine - Chomby
If you play at the Neopet site then you are already familiar with what the Chomby looks like but for those who arent - heres the scoop. Hes green, looks like a baby dinosaur and is a little on the chubby side. This figure has an awesome green color to it complete with the light green spots on the side as well as one the face. When I first got it out of the package it looked like maybe the tail would move from side to side but that is just a seam. The figure is made of a hard plastic but the tail is a little flexible. He has light green scales that run from his head all the way down the body to the tail. If you are a sucker for those big eyes that the Chombys at the site have, you are in luck because this one has them too. Almost all of the figures in the series are this size - about two inches tall but some like the Wocky are a little shorter because they are smaller animals or its just the way they are positioned.
As I mentioned, this is packaged in a rather poor manner; it comes in a plastic tube like container with tons of tape around the bottom and the top. When you get through all that mess [be careful that you dont rip the trading card in the process] you still have to deal with another layer of tape over the figure. There is a small plastic base that comes with this [as well as another one on the bottom of the package] that you can use for a display stand for your figure if you wish. This also comes with a Neopet Trading Card for the game; I got the Green Mynci [164/234] with this one and even though I dont like Myncis - it was a card that I needed for the set. You do not get a rare item code with this so please dont believe the online sites that tell you that you do get one with this figurine.
The one thing that I really like about this Chomby is the glossy color that it is. The body is big and looks exactly like it does at the website and the four little legs that hold it up are equally cute. This is a hard toy so it isnt something that smaller kids should be allowed to play with, especially if they like to throw things around. Neopets and Thinkway [the manufacturer] suggest this for kids four and older - probably for that exact reason. When these first went on sale they had a retail price of $3.99 to $5.99 which is a little high for what you get. I could see if they were a little larger or came with a rare item code but as it stands, this is a two dollar toy and thats what I paid for it. It is an officially licensed Neopet product from Thinkway so you know you are getting something that is sanctioned by the site - but paying four or five dollars for this seems a bit steep for something that is only two inches high.
The Bottom Line
If you are a fan of the Neopet site or the Chomby species then this might be something that youll want to pick up. I found a whole bunch of them at Wal-Mart for $2.00 when they were doing a major clearance on the toy section to make room for the Christmas blitz. I do plan on getting others in the series like the Grundo, Aisha, Shoryu and maybe a Kacheek but if I find them for an insanely low price chances are Ill take what ever character I can get my hands on. While I will admit that this is a very cute figure I do think that Neopets is insane asking $3.99 to $5.99 for them. To check out the Chomby in action, hit the website here: www.neopets.com/chomby. As always, thanks for the read!
