| Freak369's Full Review: Neopet Collectible Figurine Kougra |
My son has had a Kougra pet for a long time and that poor thing has been painted with so many different paint brushes that I cant keep track of it. He also zaps it with the Lab Ray so that doesnt help keep it looking normal. Me, well, Im not a fan of them but I dont hate them. Thanks to a recent shopping trip, theres only six Neopet Collectible Figurines that I am missing .. only six more to complete the collection of basic figures. After that I have to try to get my hands on the painted or special ones like the Cloud and Starry varieties. When I saw the Kougra at a local toy store for $4.00 I cringed but I knew that I would end up paying the same price for it if I found it online. To soften the blow I did get one of the more colorful ones; you can check fan run offsite fan boards for lists of different colors that these figurines come in but take them with a grain of salt, some people submit modified versions. I dont have anything against the Kougra species but some of the morphed ones are a little on the creepy side. This one has more of a Baby look to it than an adult but after emailing back and forth with some Neopet collectors I was assured that the Baby version of this figurine looks completely different.
Neopet Collectible Kougra Figurine
If youve never been to the Neopets website, chances are the various species that exist there will seem a little strange. Most of them take their characteristics from real life animals; Chombies look like dinosaurs, Scorchios and Shoyrus resemble dragons, Cybunnies look like rabbits .. you get the idea. Then there are the Grundos and Moehogs, they are ... well, their own unique beasts. The Kougra looks like a cougar but has thin stripes like a tiger, most of the time its a chick pet unless you get one that you train for the Battledome or heavily morphed. The ThinkWay Neopet Collectible Figurine is a great replica of the species and has a lot of the same detail like the larger ears, stripes, cute expression and small tail.
The one that I found at a local shop is mostly white but it has a lot of gray and light blue accents to it. The stripes are a dark gray, when I first saw it in the package I thought that they were black but when I got it home and opened it I saw that they were a dark gray. I was glad that the designers put this in a sitting position rather than a standing one; when they are standing they generally have a smaller body to them to make up for the height of the legs. The ears are what give this the Baby look to it; when I say Baby I am referring to changing the appearance of your pet to a Baby version by using a paint brush at the website. See, that sounds so confusing but it isnt. The ears do make it look a little larger than the others in the series but not so much so that it looks out of scale. As far as the durability of this, I left it sitting on the desk and one of the ferrets got to it. There were some small teeth marks on the back side of it but nothing that you would be able to see unless you were two inches from it. On a side note, Neopets and ThinkWay suggest this for ages four and older due to the possibility of it being swallowed by a child and choking on it.
These had a suggested selling price of $2.99 to $4.99 when they were introduced by Neopets and ThinkWay Toys; places like Wal-Mart and Target had them for three to four dollars which always seemed a little on the high side for something that just sits there. Yeah, they are cute and fun to collect but they dont talk or move around, in fact, there are no movable limbs to them. These were phased out of production about six to nine months ago so coming across them in a store is rare but it does happen. If you are thinking about getting the Kougra or any of the other species, try looking at sites like ebay. You can try to work out a deal with Neopet fans if you go to the offsite message boards but if you get ripped off, there is no way to get your money back. A few months ago I would have passed on getting the Kougra but now that I am so close to completing my collection, Im a little less worried about the price of them and more concerned with getting all of them.
The Bottom Line
I was pretty lucky to find this Kougra at a small local toy store, the owner had no clue that they were discontinued and said that he would check to see if there were any more in the back. Hopefully he will call me and tell me that he has more of them and that he wont jack up the price on them. Like all the other figurines in this series it comes packaged in a plastic oval container with a glossy black stand that you can pose your figure on. These are nice if you only have a couple of them but if you have more than five or six they take up a lot of room. You also get a promo TCG card that you can use with the Neopet card game system. I dont play the game but I do collect the cards. These shouldnt be confused with the cards that feature a Rare Item Code that you redeem at the website for [you guessed it] a rare item at the Space Station. If you are going to look for this online be aware that people are raising the prices on them or misrepresenting them; most tell you that it comes with a Rare Item Code card. Some do it on purpose, others harvest information from other sites and pick up incorrect descriptions. Suffice it to say .. if you are a Kougra fan then this is something that you will want to keep your eyes peeled for!
As always, thanks for the read!
