Pros: Part of a cool series, comes with trading card.
Cons: Had absolutely no desire to get it, discontinued.
I'm not going to lie, Mynci's are one of my least favorite of Neopet species. I have nothing against monkeys, which the Mynci seems to be modeled after, they just look ugly and creepy to me. I don't care if they are good fighters or great pets, in my eyes they are unsightly little creatures that have no place in Neopia. One of my NeoFriends has a Mynci at the website and thinks it's the cutest thing in the world. Creepy I tell you, just creepy. Because the collectible figurines are no longer being made, they are pretty hard to find in retail stores but online auctions are a great place to pick them up. When I was searching eBay I found someone that was selling several Neopet items in a lot; with the Mynci was a Neopet magnetic cork board, NeoPen and charms for a Neopet bracelet. If it was just the Mynci chances are I would have passed on bidding on it. The bid was stalled at $7.00 for several days so I bypassed all that nonsense and went for the "Buy It Now" option and took the whole thing for $12.00 [plus shipping], a nice deal when you add up what it would have cost to get the pen and charms not to mention the cork board.
Neopet Mynci Collectible Figurine
All the items that were in the lot were new, still in the package and in excellent shape. As soon as I saw the Mynci I cringed, sure I was happy to be one step closer to completing the collection but that also meant that I had to look at this thing when I passed the shelf that all the others are sitting on. Annabelle asked me if she could get a bracelet for the charm pieces and her eyes lit up when she saw the green Mynci. "Can I have it, please, please, please!" were all I heard. Scooping it up, she made off with the inch and a half high creature to points unknown. She's been getting pretty good at snagging the extra figurines and likes playing with them, better her than me. While I obviously have a disliking for the species I do have to admit that the figure is well made, has all the same characteristics and details that you would see on a pet at the website and is the same scale as most of the others in this series.
The Mynci is in its usual pose, sitting upright with its front paws sticking out. There is a small tail on the backside of it but that is something that gets overlooked unless you pick it up and look at it. If you've seen a Mynci at the website and felt your skin crawl, you will get that same reaction when you see this figure, that's how accurate the designers were with the detail. It's eyes are big and bulging and at times it feels like it's watching you. Like it's cyber counterpart, this also has the large ears that stick out on the sides, imagine if your ears were bigger than your hands or feet. Even so, this is something that Annabelle overlooks, to her it's just a cute little Mynci. It's the same size as most of the other figures in this series so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. That doesn't mean that Mynci's are starting to grow on me so get that thought out of your head.
This comes with a black oval stand that you can pose the figure on but if you have more than a couple of these, the bases start to take up a lot of space. The package requires a little bit of work to open it so if you are buying this for a younger child, avoid the drama and frustration and open it for them. You also get a TCG [Trading Card Game] card inside the container. This isn't a Rare Item Card [that gets redeemed at the Space Station / Grundo Warehouse] so don't believe online sellers that say that you get one with the figure. The card that came with this one was a Blue Uni, something that was promptly plucked off my desk by Annabelle. While there's really not much to the figurines, they are a nice thing for Neopet fans to collect. If you come across them in a clearance bin don't hesitate to grab them, their price will only increase over time.
When these were in active production they had a selling price of anywhere from $2.99 to $4.99 depending on the type of store you were in. Wal-Mart was at the bottom end when it came to pricing until they were tossed off into the clearance section, then you could get them for a dollar or two but the selection was really thin. I got this in a multi piece lot from a seller at eBay so it's hard to put an actual price on it. The total amount I paid was $12.00 plus $3.00 for shipping so I really made out because the pen alone is worth that much. If you are a Mynci fan or are trying to complete the collection then price won't really be an issue but I'd caution you against paying any more than five dollars for it. The only way I would pay more than that would be if it were one of the rare painted or specialty versions [Starry, Baby] that were sold in three packs.
The Bottom Line
Even though it sounds like I am bashing this figure, I'm not, I just don't care for the species. It is well make, just like all the others in the series and is something that will hold up to a lot of use. This is suggested for kids that are over the age of four because of the possibility that they could swallow it or choke on it. Even tough this doesn't have any movable limbs and can't be posed in other positions, it is still a nice piece. The green is very bright and cheery and the details on it are dead on when you compare them to the ones at the website. About the only downside to this is that they are no longer being made; Neopets has a knack for putting out a series of toys or Neopet related things then yanking them out of production. Suffice it to say, if you see something Neopet related and really like it, don't drag your feet in purchasing it.
As always, thanks for the read!
