| Freak369's Full Review: Neopet Collectible Figurine - Shoyru |
Being a Neopet addicts is never an easy thing to admit - especially when you are an adult. I got into the site after the brood started playing around there and I found myself hooked on it. With so many things to do at the site, pets to adopt and world events to keep tabs on there arent many dull moments. The Shoyru and Scorchio are two of my all time favorites at the site but I do have to admit - the Grundos are pretty cute too. When Thinkway and Neopets teamed up to make some toys I wasnt all that interested in them but when I would come across them on sale I couldnt resist getting them. Thats how I stumbled across the Collectible Figurine series. Most Wal-Mart stores have a clearance aisle in their stores, it might be hard to find but it is well worth searching for because you never know what you are going to find there. When I saw a small assortment of these on the shelf and that they were only $2.00 I couldnt resist getting a few. Being a shopoholic I had to go back again to see if they had any more or any different styles - luck was with me when I found the Shoyru and Scorchio on the same day. The colors werent the exact ones that I was looking for but I was pleased that they had something besides the Gelert and Wocky.
Neopet Collectible Figurine Shoyru
Shoyru fans have a real reason to rejoice - the Thinkway collectible figurine is very cute, has a lot of detail to it and really captures the sweeter side of the character. Much like the Shoyru figure, this one has a more baby like appearance to it - almost as if it were painted with a baby paint brush [something you can do at the website to transform an adult to a baby]. I am not sure what colors this was available in but a few stores online had them in blue, purple and green - all Wal-Mart had was the blue one and that was fine with me although purple would have been my first pick. The nice thing about this one is that it has a two tone color; the body is a nice rich blue and the wings are lighter. He stands about two inches tall but his wingspan is just a shade over two inches so hes as wide as he is tall. This presents a little bit of a problem when you go to pose him near other figures because his wings do take up a lot of space.
Thinkway and Neopets recommend this for kids over the age of four; they dont say why but I think part of it has to do with the hard plastic that it is made of as well as the size and shape. As smaller child could get a hold of this and start crewing off a wing before anyone notices. This comes packaged inside a plastic tube with a Neopet insert [dont worry about ripping this, there is nothing printed on the inside of it] with a small thick plastic base that you can use to pose the figure on. Theres also a large thinner base at the bottom of the tube, these are nice but they are too flimsy to do anything with so I ended up pitching the ones I saved up. Be sure to remove the trading card gentle so you dont rip it; since they put a lot of tape on the outside and inside of the package some could get on the plastic sleeve that the card is in. You get two cards - one is the TCG and the other is an advert for the website.
The figure is made of hard plastic but there are no points of movement to it; this is strictly something that you buy, take out of the package and put it on a shelf or in my case, on my cluttered computer monitor. I guess kids could have some fun playing with them if they had a handful but since there are no movable pieces or parts, the fun will wear off after a while. There isnt much that you need to do to maintain these, if they get dusty, just wipe them off. Dont use any type of cleaner on them or you run the risk of removing the stenciled parts of the face and the light blue color on the wings. Since he has a large flat bottom he doesnt tip over when you are moving things around - something I was a little worried about when I saw how big his wings were.
Price
I picked this up at my local Wal-Mart store for $2.00 - less than half the suggested retail price of $3.99 to $5.99. This might sound like I am cheap but there is no way I would pay the full price for these because they simply dont do anything but sit there and look cute. This does come with a Neopet Trading Card [for use with the Neopet TCG system] but thats not enough to get me to buy them at regular price. Now, if it came with five or six cards or a rare item code then maybe Id consider it but as it stands - to me - its just not worth more than a couple of dollars.
The Bottom Line
I really like the way the Shoyru looks and the fact that it has the extra detail on the wings; the package that it comes in flat out sucks because it is too hard to get open and I have to wonder if Neopets or Thinkway owns stock in some tape company because there sure is a hell of a lot of it on the top and bottom of it. These are cute little figures to collect and they do make for nice small gifts and remember - its never too early to start planning for the holidays. You can check out the Shoyru at the website by cutting and pasting this URL: www.neopets.com/shoyru and to see some the official licensed Neopet toys visit www.thinkwaytoys.com. This makes for a nice gift for a Neopet fan or someone who is addicted to the website and if you can find them on sale or on clearance, its an even sweeter deal.
As always, thanks for the read!
