I have no one to blame for Annabelle’s Uni addiction but myself. When I was playing around at the website I made the mistake of showing her what a Uni looked like. I figured it wouldn’t be a big deal; she thinks unicorns are very cool but she never really went overboard on them. When I let her make her own account and pick out a Uni from the adoption center she went crazy. Things hit a boil when she got the Thinkway Interactive Neopet Talking Uni Plushie, after that, there was no stopping her. When she saw the Chomby, Scorchio and Shoyru that I got at Wal-Mart she looked me dead in the eye and asked where her Uni was. I had found one of them on the back of the shelf and was hoping that I could save it for a special occasion but the kid is way too good in the charm department. What the hell was I thinking when I tucked it away to put in her Christmas stocking? It’s August ... Christmas isn’t for another four months.
Neopet Uni Collectible Figurine
The Uni’s at the Neopets website aren’t my first choice when it comes to characters. I ended up with one when I found a Green Uni morphing potion and used it to get an avatar - it was better than having a Bori. Even though I don’t really ‘like’ the Uni’s, I don’t dislike them either. With Annabelle, it’s a whole different story. She goes crazy for them and even goes so far as to bring her talking one with her to the library and park. When she saw this one she went bonkers; blue isn’t her favorite color but that didn’t stop her from letting out a huge squeal when she saw it. She had a lot better luck opening hers than I did with mine, they put so much tape on the container that you almost crack a sweat trying to open it.
Like almost all the other figurines in this collection, the Uni stands about two inches tall but with the wings it is wider than the others. It’s made of solid plastic so there’s no real chance of it tipping over if it gets bumped. The body of it is two tone blue and the colors have a glossy shine to them. I’m not sure what other colors this is available in, when I asked at one of the Neopet message boards no one had any information on them. If you are going to put these on display or have them out of the container make sure you keep them out of direct sunlight and away from younger children. Neopets and Thinkway suggest this for kids ages four and older because of the potential of choking as well as biting off a wing or leg. There aren’t many figures in the series that have wings but I can see how a kid could chew one off if given enough time.
Even though Uni’s aren’t my favorite I do have to admit that this one is pretty cute. It has those soft doe like eyes, sculpted wings and a whispy tail. You might think that because this is only two inches high that it might not have a lot of detail to it but the designers did a great job with it. This brings up an important topic - buying online. There are a couple of different types of Neopet figures / figurines on the market from Thinkway; these are the two inch ones but there are ones that are larger. These have different colors than the smaller ones and cost more so please don’t get taken by unscrupulous vendors that are advertising the larger ones but in reality are selling the smaller ones. These comes with a Neopet Trading Card for use with the TCG system; you can collect these or battle with them. Annabelle got a Green Grundo in this package, it was a card that I already had so I let her keep it.
Price
As I mentioned in a few other reviews, I found these in the clearance aisle at Wal-Mart for $2.00. When they first hit the market they were selling anywhere from $3.99 to $5.99 which is a little too expensive for my blood. I could see if it did something or came with an accessory to two but all you get is the figurine. The plastic base that comes with it is nice but if the figure has smaller legs like the Uni, it is hard to position it on the stand since there is a huge raised star in the middle of it. You can flip it over so the star is indented but you still have the same problem. For two dollars this was more than worth it but I know if she would have seen these in the aisle at regular price - she would have bought it with her own money if she couldn’t have whined me into submission.
The Bottom Line
I guess when it comes to making a kid happy you are a little less relaxed with your money. I did see these in the aisle at Wal-Mart when they were regularly priced buy the ones that they had never appealed to me. Chances are if they weren’t on sale I would have gotten her a Uni since she loves them so much and it’s getting hard to find Neopet things these days. They are getting ready to release a new line so I guess they are thinning out the stock before the big promotion. The figurine is cute and is an exact copy of what you see at the website but it’s portable, doesn’t require you to read to it or feed it [like you have to do at the site] and what can I say, she loves this little thing. This would make for a great stocking stuffer for those who are into the Neopet site or love Uni’s but I’ll take it a step further - it’s even nice for those who love plain old unicorns too!
