| Freak369's Full Review: Neopet Collectible Figurine Wocky |
Ive never cared for the Wonky species at the Neopet website; having a disliking of cats to begin with, their slightly smug look almost immediately put me off them. With that being said, I recently acquired one of them from a seller who was getting rid of four individual Neopet Collectible Figurines. It was a take the good with the bad scenario; there were four Neopets in the lot - Cybunny, Moehog, Gelert and this Wocky. In order to get the Gelert and Cybunny I had to also take the Moehog and Wocky. The seller said that these were brand new, still sealed in their little plastic containers but Ive heard that story before and didnt want to get too excited about the purchase until it arrived. Lucky for me the seller was honest; all four of them were still in their containers and had the TCG cards with them. These shouldnt be confused with the three pack of specialty figures [Starry, Baby etc] that sell for a higher price but afford you the opportunity to own rarer versions of the species. Alas, these are the regular pets so if its the rare ones you are after, start hitting sites like eBay to find them.
Neopet Collectible Figurine Wocky
I was hoping that I would get a blue or yellow Wocky to try and add a little bit of color to the figures that Ive already collected and I was a little disappointed when I saw that this one was red. When I tossed it up on the shelf with the others it didnt look half bad, in fact, after a few days it really started to grow on me. Now, dont start thinking that I am getting into cats, Im talking about the figure. There is a lot of detail to it but unless you are looking at it close up, you will miss a lot of it. It stands almost two inches high and has that puffy tail, pinks red bandanna around its neck and those arched eyebrows that give it that smug look. This might sound like a contradiction but it isnt very colorful but it has a nice color to it. Yeah, I guess I better explain that; 95% of it is red with a touch of pinkish red and some black accents so it doesnt have a lot of different colors like the Moehog or Cybunny. It lacks color variety but has a nice overall color. That has to be one of the strangest sentences Ive every typed.
As I mentioned in other reviews of the Neopet figurines, this comes with a small oval black base that you can use to pose your critter on. If you only have a couple of them then the bases come in handy but if you start to amass a lot of them, they take up space. The figures rest on the bases nicely but the cut out star shape does make them wobble a little but. Each one comes with a Neopet TCG promo card that you can use with the Neopet card game system. I dont play the game but I do collect the cards; this one came with a Blue Ixi card. If you are going to try to buy these online make sure that you are getting something that comes sealed in the container; otherwise you might end up with a figure that is banged up or has marks on it. They are pretty strong and made from a hard plastic but if a dog [or guinea pig] would happen to get a hold of one of them, they could leave some teeth marks on them. Neopets and ThinkWay suggest these for kids ages four and older due to the possibility that they could swallow them. This goes double if you have younger kids in the house and they like watching you surf the website, a little bit of caution goes a long way.
Price
When Neopets and ThinkWay started advertising these figures they had a retail price from $2.99 to $4.99; in my opinion they arent really worth that much but being a Neopet addict, I got sucked into buying them. These were sold at places like Wal-Mart and Target for the lower end, about $2.99 a piece. eBay was where I found these; someone was selling four of them for ten dollars; when I did the math for each figure and the shipping it came out to about $3.50 for each of them. Thats about the same price I would have paid for them if I would have picked them up at Wal-Mart when they were first on the market. If you are a fan of Neopets or of the Moehog species then this is worth trying to find, especially if you have some of the other figures and want to add some color to the ones you have.
The Bottom Line
Im still a little wishy washy about the Wocky; its grown on me a little since I got it but I doubt that it will ever make it on to my top ten list of Neopet species. My best piece of advice about this entire series is this, if you see it in a store and it is selling for a reasonable price [three dollars or lower], dont do what I did and say that youll get it on your next trip. These are pretty hard to find in retail stores so if you do come across them, dont hesitate on getting them. I wish the packages were a little easier to get open but at least I know that if I see one that s still sealed I know that the base and trading card are still inside. Look at it this way, even if you arent a fan of the Wocky you can still work out a trade with someone that is. Sure you are taking a risk that you will end up getting ripped off but there are a lot of honest Neopet fans out there ... and some of them would love to get their hands on their very own Wocky Neopet Collectible Figurine
As always, thanks for the read!
