| Freak369's Full Review: Neopets Spiral Bound Notebook |
If you thought that Hello Kitty and Barbie items were conquering the market in regards to merchandising, you havent seen some of the Neopet things that have been released over the past few years. Limited II is the store that carried a lot of Neopet items but you can also find the toys and accessories at K-Mart, Wal-Mart and Target. The spiral bound notebooks were wildly popular when they were fist released because they came with a Virtual Prize Code that could be redeemed at the Grundo Warehouse. Sadly, these codes were often stolen from the notebooks or copied down and redeemed without making a purchase. This left a lot of sore customers but TNT [The Neopets Team] have always worked with people when codes didn't work correctly.
5 x 7 Neopet Spiral Bound Notebooks
[75 sheets, standard rule, with top and side margins]
These spiral bound notebooks are not your average run of the mill products; they have slightly thicker covers than regular notebooks and are all adorned with various Neopet characters. The biggest problem with these is that there are a lot of them to try and collect; another issue is that there are 4x6 and 5x7 notebooks and there are some that have similar names or species on the covers and that can lead to confusing when ordering them online or bidding on them.
A great example of that is the 'Faerie Kacheek' 5x7 notebook; I ordered one of these from an online store that supposedly specialized in Neopet products and ended up getting a 5x7 'Faerie Kougra' instead. Kacheeks and Kougras look nothing alike so I have to assume the person packing the order was clueless about the species and the differences between them. I did eventually get the notebook that I wanted but I had to send them a link to the Neopet listing of it so they could match up the cover.
If you are a Neopet collector you can find the 5x7 notebooks in the following designs; 'White Kougra', 'Spotted Kau', 'Blue Kougra', 'Faerie Kacheek', 'Disco Aisha', 'Blue Bruce', 'Starry Scorchio', 'Single Portal', 'Kacheek' and 'Faerie Kougra'. While they are all nice looking, the best ones are the 'Starry Scorchio' and the 'Faerie Kacheek'; so far we have managed to collect five of these and are still looking for the others in the series. Neopets was going to release a collector's pack that contained six random 5x7 notebooks but it never happened. As it stands, most of these are out of production for the time being but can be found at retail stores, most of them at reduced prices.
The exception to the 5 x 7 notebook series is the Neopets Composition Book; this is a 5 x 7 but it has a completely different look than the others. While it does have a few f the Neopet figures on the cover it also has the traditional marble look of a composition notebook. These initially sold for about a dollar more than the soft sided notebooks but eventually the price dropped to the same suggested retail price of the soft sided ones. While all of the notebooks are well made and have cute characters on the covers, it's the paper that really matters. This isnt cheap notebook paper; it's crisp and suitable for all types of writing but a little too small to be used for school notes.
These had a suggested retail price of anywhere from $2.50 to $3.50 when they were first released; that price dropped quickly when they weren't flying off the shelves. The Virtual Price Code was also an issue; they were added to make the products more attractive to the site users but in some cases it backfired when codes came up as being 'already redeemed' or didn't work at all. I do have to give Neopets credit in this respect; any time I have ever had a problem with a code they have always responded within 24 hours to ask for more information or to send another code.
The Bottom Line
Above and beyond everything, this is a notebook. Yes, it is a Neopet notebook but the functionality is there for it to be used for notes. You are paying for the Neopet name and the code, whether you want to admit it or not, nothing is free and trust me, they factored the price of the prize into the price. If you are a bargain shopped you can check the sales and clearance sections for these; they might have some shelf wear to them but they are still worth getting if you collect Neopet merchandise. The paper is nice, the margins are consistent and the covers are thick; it's a well made notebook that is slightly overpriced but if you are a NeoAddict, you will overlook the price and grab as many different styles as you can.
As always, thanks for the visit
