| Freak369's Full Review: Neopets Trading Card Game Battle for Meridell Rare... |
I get funny looks at the comic book store that I hit on a weekly basis; I go there to get my comics and to see what goodies they have for sale but I always check to see if they have any Neopet related items. Little do they know but one of their employees is a closet Neopet fanatic and not only does he collect the TCG / Trading Card Game cards but he also is an avid user of the Neopet website. While my days of hitting card events are long gone I still get a kick out of collecting the various cards from Neopet plots and series. Some are a little more special than others for any number of reasons but I do tend to gravitate towards the darker more sinister cards and not the fun and colorful ones like the "Contest of Champions".
Contest of Champions 35/140
When it comes to colorful cards, few of them can compete with this one. Regardless of whether you collect the cards or use them to play the Trading Card Game, this is one of the nicest ones with the most detail in the Battle For Meridell set. It also shows off a little bit of the animosity that exists between the different knights and the pranks that they play on each other, if you arent privy to the jokes that they play on each other, the 'quote' section of the card will give you a slight clue as to some of the things that they do to each other. The playability of the card is good but it isnt anything that you will want to trade an extremely rare card for. You can buy this from card dealers but there is always the chance of getting ripped off or if ordering online, getting something that is scratched up or has been heavily played.
There are a lot of great looking cards in the decks and the artists that worked on them did a great job but there aren't many that can compete with what this has to offer you from a visual standpoint. You get the Blue, Yellow, Red and Green knights on horseback with full jousting equipment but that is just part of it. They are positioned in the middle of a tournament set up and there is a lot of subtle but distinct detail in the background. The Blue Knight is partially blocked from view but rest assured, he is there. If you are just into the cards to collect them because of the artwork this is one that should be at the top of your list because it is one of the most detailed and colorful.

You do not need to tap this card I order to use it but you do need to make sure that it is associated with a Fire Neopet [specific picks from the Battle For Meridell series: Starry Scorchio, Red Kougra etc]. This can be a great card to have in a deck and it can never hurt to have multiples of them. From the boxes and packs I have bought I have only managed to collect 4 duplicates, two of which were put into storage to complete decks.
Year Released: 2004
Series Number: 35/140
By Neopet standards and their card ranking this is considered a 'rare' card but if you know anything about the website and the items, rare doesn't always mean rare. In this case the meaning of the word is the possibility that you will get it in a pack or deck. If you were looking to buy this card in mint condition, pay no more than .35 to .45 cents for it. It is not a Holofoil and certainly isnt something that you positively need to play a game and win. It is nice to have to equip an item on the fly but if you are going up against new players who haven't seen these types of special cards in action, take it easy on them.
Directions: To use this card you need to have a Fire Neopet equipped; when a four, five or six is rolled the player can attach an Equipment card from their hand to the Neopet. This can be a great card to have in our deck if you know you are going to be facing off against people who have a history of using almost unbeatable items, a little extra defense can never hurt.
Quote: "The Red Knight has loosened the Blue Knight's saddle, unscrewed the Green Knight's shield and put itching powder in the Yellow Knight's armour" As I mentioned previously, this quote gives you a little glimpse into what the Red Knight is up to and what he had in store for the other knights. It's a shame that some of his imagery is blocked by the text box but that's all part of the game, without it you wouldnt have a clue how the card is used and what its capabilities are.
Since the image here isn't clear at all, you can get a better look at it at the Neopet website by viewing your deck or just cutting and pasting this URL into your browser window:

The Bottom Line
This isn't a card that you positively need to have in your deck but it is nice. You don't have to tap to use it so it makes it a little easier to work into the gameplay. The artwork is what really got to me about "Contest of Champions"; it has a incredible amount of detail and color to it and has the same high quality of all the TCG cards; the face will not scratch or mar easily if you use it often and unless you are carrying them around in your pocket [please don't do that, the cards don't like it] they resist warping and bending. If you are lucky enough to get this in a deck or pack have fun with it and get some use from it. TCG and role playing cards are a great way to use your imagination but if all you are doing is buying them to build decks to resell, you are missing the entire concept of the game.
As always, thanks for the visit
