Neopet TCG "Bomberry" 66/140: This Berry Has Heartburn Written All Over It

Written: Apr 02 '08 (Updated Apr 02 '08)
Pros:Nice artwork, +3 for banking, nice for berry collectors.
Cons:It's a berry and it's not terribly exciting.
The Bottom Line: Not a visually stunning card but nice for a quick three banking points.

If you play at the Neopet website you know that it is extremely easy to start collecting things. You don't start off with that intention but somehow it just happens; before you know it you have 400 of something and decide to just leave them in your Safety Deposit Box. You forget about them until there is an avatar or site event that inflates the price. That only makes the situation worse because then you start hoarding everything because you never know when the price is going to skyrocket. The Bomberry card from the Battle For Meridell deck has a number of really cool perks to it; while the artwork is a little on the boring side, I do have to admit that it is a nice looking berry as far as berries are concerned.

Neopet TCG "Bomberry" 66/14

Imagery: There aren't many boring cards in this series but this is one of them. I mean, you can't exactly fault the berry because, after all, it is just a berry. The green and yellow colors used on it are interesting as they are more of a mustard yellow and olive green rather than the straight forward colors that are used for the Meridell items that you will come across. There is a branch sticking out of the Bomberry but then again, that could be a wick of some sort as there is a flame at the end of it and it is called a "bomb berry" so I suppose you could take that however you want. The background of the card is dark but you can make out some vines and part of a tree.

Deck Series: Battle For Meridall
Promo Card: No
Strength: +3
Agility: N/A
Magic: +3
Intelligence: N/A

Even though this lacks Agility and Intelligence you do get a +3 for both Strength and Magic and a +3 for banking. Why is the +3 so attractive? Because it helps to add to the banking total of 21 that you need to win the game. The only restriction to the card is that you have to have a Fire Neopet to use it, outside of that it is a pretty easy card to use and to work into any type of deck theme. I'd play this mid game when no one is really paying attention, probably when you have 11 to 13 points in the bank and that extra three points can really intimate other players and force them to make a hasty move. It won’t always work out that way but when playing against opponents who don't have that much experience it can be a swift blow to them.

Year Released: 2004
Series Number: 66/140
Item | Food Fruit | Fire

Item cards aren't a rarity in this deck but when you compare this to other it does have some really nice perks to it; Neopets classifies this as an uncommon card but I have managed to get three of them from packs and boxes. The +3 is what really makes this card nice to have but the artwork makes it an iffy pick for collectors who do not play the game. Why collect the cards if you aren’t going to play? Why do you collect things at the site or create a gallery? Because of the weird, cool, spooky or strange things that you come across. The fact that it is a berry and a bomb at the same time makes this fall into a few different categories; food, strange food, booby-trap etc.

Directions: Wow, this can be a difficult card to play if you read the directions on the card; it confused the heck out of me the first time I read it but thanks to a more experienced player at a TCG event, I got some great advice on it. First you need to have a Fire Neopet to use this card. The wording on it makes it seem like it is impossible to play. Basically when the vent is over if your opponent rolled a 1 on the last turn he gets to replace a Neopet with the top card from their deck. If it was a tapped pet it stays tapped and retains all the equipment that the former pet had attached. The wording on the card makes this seem harder to use than it really is.

Quote: "Once defused, Bomberries are extremely delicious". As mentioned, there are a lot of berries that can be eaten but some of them aren't all that good for your pet. It would have been interesting to have a whole series of berry cards so you could make a berry deck but that would be a berry silly concept. Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Berry items can be very common at the website and there are tons of them that are food items but some that can fall into other categories. Other berry items at the site include the "Islandberry", "Brogle Berry", "Stramberry", "Tchea Krawkberry", "Eyeballberry", "Voidberry", "Loveberry" and "Fishberry". Some of the TCG cards that you can collect include "Starberry", "Thornberry" and "Slumberberry Potion". Some berries can make you sick, others can cure you, so it is important to know about them before you start feeding them to your pet.

The Bottom Line

While the artwork isn't all that impressive and collectors might not have this at the top of their list it does have a +3 for banking and that can make or break an event if you are close to hitting 21 points. The wording on the card in the direction box makes this sound like it is a complicated card but it isn't. All that is required is a Fire pet and that's it. The card could have definitely been more exciting to look at but until Neopets hires me as an artist all I can do is write the reviews and hope that future berry related items will be a tad bit more interesting.

As always, thanks for the visit…
