| northeastgal's Full Review: Neosporin First Aid Antibiotic Ointment 0.5oz |
Everyone needs First Aid products. I try to keep a supply on hand of necessary items to take care or cuts, burns, scrapes, aches, and so on. Some of those items need to be checked for expiration date and replaced as needed. I recently checked my medicine chest to check all my products and threw out a few items that had expired and needed this Neosporin. Although they say some products don't have to be thrown out since the product doesn't go bad but may be weaker in strength, I will toss out expired items. If I have a need for any First Aid or other pain relievers, I want it to be there fresh and not in a weaker strength. Hopefully I many not need any of these items for months, but you never can tell.
The expirtation date on this product is right on the side of the packaging but when you discard the packaging you have to look on the bottom of the tube.
About Neosporin
This Original Neosporin by Pfizer is in a 2" tube with a small twist cap. I hate to spend $5.79 for the small .5 oz size but when I need to use it the price someone does not matter. I purchased it at Walgreens drug store but can be purchased where Health Aids are sold. They have a few other Neosporin products, but I've only purchased this Original tube for my family's needs.
This is a Triple Action Protection meaning it contains Active ingredients of Bacitracin, Neomycin and Polymycin. The Inactive ingredients are; cocoa butter, cottonseed oil, olive oil, sodium pyruvate, Vitamin E and white petrolatum. It's for external use only. The combination of the 3 Active ingredients help kill bacteria with antibiotic agents that also slow down or stop the growth of bacteria. This ointment can be applied 3 times a day but not to exceed 1 week if condition persists, gets worse, you see a rash or allergic reaction. In this case, consult your doctor.
Not to be used for serious injuries such as dog bites, deep or puncture wounds and burns that need medical attention. This product should be kept away from children and if injested, you should get medical attention or call the Poison Control Center right away.
They recommend you to keep one in your kitchen, bathroom workshop and travel bag. But since a little goes a long way, I find I can use one tube around my home and take it along if I'm going away for an extended time with my other essenctial Beauty & Health items.
Neosporin's website claims this ointment helps heal a wound 4 days faster than bandage alone. I do believe that statement and have tested that theory but I'm not sure if it's 4 days. It's a #1 doctor recommended brand. This ointment may reduce or avoid scars.

My experience
The other night my 2 grandsons came over. I store their skateboard in my garage which they enjoy playing with on the sidewalk when they come over. I usually stay outside and keep an eye on them but this time I was just about to go outside and within a couple of minutes, my one grandson came to the door in panic and told me what I didn't want to hear. The other grandson had fallen and scraped his right leg near the knee. I was glad I didn't have to call 911. I gave him a clean wet washcloth and asked him to apply it gently on the scrape. It has a little blood but nothing serious. I did not want to do it because when an adult tries to help a child with this type of injury they somehow panic. He was able to follow my instructions and after cleaning the area himself, he applied Neosporin again following my instructions and covered the area with large bandages to keep the ointment from getting rubbed off. Later that night, he told me it felt much better and did not burn as it did earlier.
I have used this ointment many times myself. A few times I didn't use it since I thought it was a small scratch or cut and have noticed it did take longer to heal. Whenever I've used this ointment it seems the wounds heal faster. I don't keep my wound covered all the time. I do allow air to help with the healing process. Besides I don't want to keep it moist by covering it. At bedtime I reapply the ointment and cover it with a suitable size bandage. This gives it all night for the ointment to protect it and speed up the healing process.
Since accidents can't be planned, it's a must to have this ointment available in every home before the need arises. You get fast, effective, long lasting infection protection which does not burn when applied. I've used this product for many years. I like to have this available for my family so they can feel better quicker.
I wrote this review as a reminder which we all need to keep those important items up to date and the importance of taking a look at our First Aid supplies to replenish, add or remove so that when there's an emergency we are well stocked with the necessary items needed to prevent infections and speed up healing of minor cuts, burns and bruises.
