Pros:Easily available and easy to use, highly effective for minor cuts and scrapes
Cons:Not appropriate for serious wounds; may cause sensitivities in some people
The Bottom Line: Neosporin ointment is an excellent product for care of minor cuts, scrapes and burns. I highly recommend it for this purpose.
I am reviewing Neosporin Original Ointment. I have used this product for myself, and for my children when they were young. It is the product I look to for cuts, scrapes, and minor burns. Of course if the kids or I sustained a more serious injury, we would have consulted a doctor. Other products I considered purchasing were Polysporin, Bactroban, Bacitracin. However, my phyicians and my childrens' doctors generally recommended Neosporin for simple cuts, wounds. They also mentioned Bactroban, however it is more expensive and I was a single parent for many years, so tried to keep costs down as much as possible.

Please do note that Neosporin may cause sensitization as it contains neomycin (problematic for some people).
Neosporin is an antibiotic that is packaged in a small tube and placed initially in a small box. There is one oz of product (or 28.3g). Cost is around $6.49, but will differ on various online sites or brick and mortar stores. It is easily available.
~ First aid to help prevent infection in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns
~ Helps minimize the appearance of scars while preventing infection.
~ #1 Doctor Recommended Brand for Infection Protection.
~ No other triple antibiotic ointment kills more types of bacteria
Ingredients from the tube:
Active Ingredients: Each gram contains: Polymyxin B Sulfate (5,000 units), Bacitracin Zinc (400 units), Neomycin (3.5 mg)
Inactive Ingredients: Cocoa Butter, Cottonseed Oil, Olive Oil, Sodium Pyruvate, Tocopheryl Acetate, White Petrolatum
Directions for use from packaging:
Clean the affected area. Apply a small amount of this product (an amount equal to the surface area of the tip of a finger) on the area 1 to 3 times daily. May be covered with a sterile bandage. Store at 59° to 77°F. They state that this product should not be used for longer than a week without consulting your physician.
Use for impetigo:
Neosporin may be used for impetigo, however this should be diagnosed by a physician, and let the physician decide if this is sufficient, and his/her recommendations for use, or they may ascertain that the impetigo should be treated systemically instead (oral medication in lieu of this topical ointment).
Warnings from the packaging:
For external use only. Do not use in the eyes or apply over large areas of the body. In case of deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns, consult a physician. Stop use and consult a physician if the condition persists or gets worse, or if a rash or other allergic reaction develops. Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients. Do not use longer than 1 week unless directed by a physician. Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In case of accidental ingestion, seek professional assistance or contact a poison control center immediately.
I have used Neosporin for my kids for cuts, scrapes, and burns of a minor nature. I did use Neosporin when my boys contracted impetigo on a camping trip, but the doctor prescribed oral medication also.
I recently used this product for cuts on my feet, and also placed band-aids on top. This has been difficult to heal as I swim almost daily so the band-aids are constantly coming off. However, I know the cuts will heal shortly, and no infection has occurred thanks to the protection of Neosporin.
It is inevitable that you and your kids will cut scrape or burn yourself on occasion. Having Neosporin available in your medicine cabinet will save you time and trouble. At just over $6.00 it is reasonably priced, and is easily available on or offline. Merely squeezing out a small amount of the product will provide the protection you need. Do be sure to completely read in directions and warnings, and see your physician if there is not healing within the period of a week or if the wound worsens. I am giving this product 4 1/2 stars.
Thanks for reading!
