This is the first in a series of reviews I will be writing on my recent trip to San Francisco.
Our first day in San Francisco brought us to Pier 39 to watch the sea lions on the specially made dock. After watching them we went looking for dinner. We had no particular recommendations -we just "lucked out" in finding Neptune's Palace; one of many restaurants in the area.
It is touted in the front of the restaurant as "One of San Francisco's 10 best restaurants" so we thought it a safe bet!
There was no wait on a Wednesday evening around 6:30 in June. In fact, we were seated by the window. Please, if you go there try to get a window seat. Wait for one if you have to. What is in store is a real treat, especially if you go no earlier than 6:30.
The prices were high, but San Francisco is one of the most expensive cities in the country to live in (average cost of rent is $22,000/year) so the price of food is all relative to the price of everything in this terrific city.
I got the Mixed Grill which was absolutely delicious. A mix of seafood - shrimp, scallops, lobster, vegetables over rice in just the perfect sauce cost $25.00.
My husband got the Crablegs which came with pasta. The sauce was also delicious. He could have had another plateful! That was $18.00.
We got rolls before dinner which were very good. There were two kinds, one of which was an onion roll of sorts. Salad was extra as were appetizers, of course, neither of which we ordered. The salad range was $6.00; the appetizer range was $6.00-$11.00.
Very big in all of San Francisco and on this menu also is Dungeness Crab which is a large whole crab. Someday we'll be adventurous enough to try it!
A glass of lemonade was $4.00 and the cappucino was $3.50. We skipped the deserts for $6.00.
The food was wonderful. This is not a fancy restaurant at all. In fact, rather than being quiet and formal it is casual and noisy which was fine for me. I'm personally more comfortable in that setting. The service was great; our waiter attentive and nice.
The reason you must sit by the window is to watch the sunset. It is spectacular and all the more so with The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and the fog in the background. A real treat. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
