We have quite a few fruit trees and the dehydrator is the perfect tool for making great snacks. Yes, it is time consuming to peel the fruit, and slice it evenly, but take a look at the prices for dehydrated items in the grocery stores!
We've gone through several dehydrators. We first made our own, building the trays and the casing. It had a light bulb for the heat source and was a failure.
We then bought a model at our local fair. It looked good, but only had a heat source and no fan, which did not do a good job on the items we dried. Many times the food began to go bad because the trays at the top didn't get heat and there was no fan to circulate the air.
We then bought this model and it dries quickly and efficiently. It comes with 4 trays, but we soon added more trays and it still does a great job. I would advise, though, that you place one type of fruit per shelf as different foods have different drying times and this will save you time in that you don't have to take 1/2 the items off one shelf to let the remaining ones dry.
We've dried jerky, herbs, onions, carrots (to make soup mixes), but my favorite use of the food drier is for fruit.
Dried apples make a great snack. However, my all-time favorite dried fruit has got to be pineapple! This is like eating candy and care has to be taken not to eat an entire pineapple at a time, which would be easy to do if you're into mindless snacking!
If you want great tasting nutritious snacks and you're willing to put some work into preparing the food, this food dehydrator would be the way to go.
The only complaint I would have is that with continued heavy usage the trays will need to be replaced. Clean up can be tedious as fruit juices can be very sticky and the trays are a plastic grid. We've had trays start to crack along the stress points due to continued heating and cleaning.
