| janetaba's Full Review: Nesco Jerky Works BJW-1P |
We like jerky. We like to take it camping, and my husband takes some with him to work so he has something to munch on during the day. In fact, several of his co-workers have him make jerky for them.
Jerky Works takes ordinary hamburger and squeezes it into strips. Dehydrate the strips, and you have easy to make inexpensive jerky.
When my husband first decided that he wanted to make jerky, and bought our dehydrator, my first thought was "sure, and who is going to end up cutting all that meat?" Well, after cutting beef just once, we knew that there had to be a better way. We found Jerky Works next to the dehydrator display in Wal-Mart, and bought it.
We have tried different grades of hamburger in it. Jerky Works, squeezes them all out with little effort. If you have ever used a cookie press, you can use Jerky Works.
The initial kit comes with a sampler of jerky spices to try. We like the original, but our son likes some of the spicier ones. The original is available more often than the others, but you can order spices online from Nesco at www.nesco.com
Finding the replacement spice in the stores is kind of frustrating. Wal-Mart is not consistent with their ordering practices. We seem to buy a couple of boxes, and then have to wait a month or more for them to get more spice in. We have gone to most of our local Wal-Marts and bought out the last of their stock. Unfortunately, Wal-Mart seems to be the only store in our area that carries it.
When asked about anything that is out of stock the pat answer seems to be "It's a seasonal item." Gee, when is Jerky Season?
The kit also comes with two funnels to make beef sticks. We haven't really used these much. They work okay; we just like our jerky flat.
In fact, they are very responsive to customer needs. We bought a package of spices and one of the envelopes of salt was not in the box. Another package had all the salt, but one of the envelopes was empty. I went to the web site, and wrote them. They emailed me back, and sent me the replacements right away.
The gun comes apart for easy cleaning, and can be put in the dishwasher. Ours is several years old and has not rusted or cracked.
The grade of hamburger I recommend is 85% Beef and above. The lower grades have too much fat. We figured out the price and a pound of the cheapest pre-made jerky was about $16.00. We can make jerky for about $4.00 a pound depending on the price of the hamburger.
