Carnation Instant Breakfast – When you just don’t have time to sit down and eat!

Written: Jan 03 '08 (Updated Jan 03 '08)
Pros:Decent flavor, tremendous amount of vitamins and minerals
Cons:Chalky, powdery texture, hard to stir or shake up for smooth "milkshake" like consistency.
The Bottom Line: A lot of vitamins, minerals and a decent flavor, but you really need to blend it well in order to keep it from being grainy.

Nestle provides the Carnation Instant Breakfast Rich Milk Chocolate for people on the go, I think. This has to be one of the quickest ways to get some decent nutrition with a decent flavor that is FAST.

They do provide some healthy ideas on how to “spice” up the drink mix, usually right on the box too. My most recent pouch shows a Chocolate-Banana Delight recipe right on the front.

The Product

Making the drink, or shake as I call it, is very simple. You take 1 cup cold milk (preferably fat free milk) and stir the pouch into this cup of milk. And, you are ready to go.

The pouch contains 36 g of powder. The nutritional value will be listed below. This is considering 1 cup fat free milk and is based upon the 2,000 calorie diet plan:

Nutrition Information

The package contains 2 columns. One for the package only and one with the values with 1 Cup Fat Free Vit. A & D Milk, which is what I included below:

Calories 220
Calories
from Fat 10

By % Daily Value listed below:
Total Fat 1 g 2%
Saturated Fat 0 g 3%
Trans Fat 0 g (blank)
Cholesterol less than 5 mg 2%
Sodium 80 mg 9%
Potassium 320 mg 21%
Total Carbs 27 g 13%
Dietary Fiber less than 1 g 4%
Sugars 20 g (blank)
Protein 5 g 25%
Vitamin A 45%
Vitamin C 50%
Calcium 50%
Iron 25%
Vitamin D 25%
Vitamin E 25%
Vitamin K 25%
Thiamin 25%
Riboflavin 30%
Niacin 25%
Vitamin B6 25%
Folic Acid 25%
Vitamin B12 25%
Biotin 25%
Pantothenic Acid 25%
Phosphorus 50%
Iodine 30%
Magnesium 25%
Zinc 25%
Copper 25%
Manganese 25%

Now, the claims on the box and the package shows that this product (when put in with 1 cup fat free vitamin A and D milk) provides 2 times the protein of an egg and 2 times the calcium of yogurt (in a 6 fluid ounce container).

The product is considered “Orthodox” and “Union” as it has the “Circle U” on the package. It also contains notice that the product is “D” for Dairy product.

The Ingredients

The ingredients are important, as well, if you are watching allergies or do not like certain things. These are listed below:

Nonfat milk, sugar, maltodextrin, cocoa processed with alkali, lactose, less than 2% of: diacalcium phosphate, natural and artificial flavors, carrageenan, sodium aluminosilicate, soy lecithin, magnesium hydroxide, sodium ascorbate (vitamin c), vitamin e, acetate, vitamin a, palmitate, niacinamide, ferric orthophosphate (iron), zinc oxide, calcium pantothenate (pantothenic acid), copper gluconate, manganese sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin b6), thiamin mononitrate, phylloquinone (vitamin k), biotin, folic acid, vitamin b12.

Overall Impressions

The product is not bad. You will do better with a blender or possibly a hand held mixing device than you can do with a spoon. The mixture seems to take quite a bit of shaking to get everything to mix together well.

I originally bought it to give to my daughter. I was thinking possibly the extra vitamins and minerals would be more beneficial to her than chocolate milk. I sold it to her as a “big girl” chocolate milkshake, which, technically, it truly is. She’s tried it twice, drinking very little each time, and kind of wrinkles up her brow. It just doesn’t mix up well by shaking or stirring. It leaves a granular feeling in your mouth and on your tongue.

I have tried it and I don’t mind it. I would not want to drink it every day. And, when reviewing the ingredients myself, now, I see that SUGAR is the second ingredient listed. That in and of itself, makes me want to stick with regular milk, or the fat free skim chocolate milk that we purchase in the stores.

If you have an older relative, like we did, that will not eat very well, only wants chocolate, candy bars, and junk food, this might be a decent alternative to help get some nutritional value and vitamins and minerals in their body. There are worse things on the market and there are much better things on the market.

I will finish off the big package of these that I purchased, but I don’t know that I will purchase any others.

~Thanks for spending time with me today!~
