1GQ's Full Review: NetGear WGPS606 (WGPS606NA) Print Server
I first came across the WGPS606 on Netgear's website long before its actual release. This is a unique product in the home office market because it combines three technologies into a single device; wireless ethernet bridge, wirless print server, and a four port switch. When the device hit the stores a month ago I bought one from Amazon for $89. I was skeptical about how it would perform considering its closest competitor the Linksys WET54GS5 sells for $149 and does not have print server capability.
When the package arrived I opened the box to find a stylish chic white compact device, two USB cables, power adapter, a quick install poster, and a cd-rom. I was disappointed that they did not include an ethernet cable.
Be advised I'm not a networking newbie. That said setup was a breeze. To summarize the steps:
1. Plug in the WGPS606 to the wall outlet for power
2. Connect to a PC via a ethernet cable and run the CDROM wizard software. *The wizard interface is friendly and tells you exactly what too do; definately designed for a network newbie.
Thats it I was done. Fast forward 30+ days later. I'm very happy to report that the WGPS606 works flawlessy. Especially surprising is that unlike its competitors the wireless ethernet bridge function never drops its connection even after long idle periods.
Performance is also very strong. I have two PCs attached to the device. One is a desktop which I use for general web surfing and games. The other is my work laptop which I use to telecommute. I haven't noticed any visible performance drop using both PCs at the same time even when online gaming on the desktop PC.
Wireless range is great. Its roughly 310ft away from the wireless router (Linksys WRT54G + sinal booster) and even through all the walls recieves a 67% signal strength. The Linksys WUSB11 which this replaces only recieved 40% signal and dropped alot but it was also a B protocal to be fair.
I don't use the print function often but I have no noticeable flaws in the way it works. It can support up too two printers. Be advised though you can't use any software enabled printer features like say checking how much ink is left.
The WGPS606 has only one flaw in my opinion which is that it has no on/off switch. The device is always on; don't worry though it runs cool and silent.
The only comment I sent to Netgear is that they allow the USB port to also use USB storage devices like their routers can.
