Pros:Solid construction, Good brand reliability, Reasonable price
Cons:Noisy cooling fans
My office has used Netgear ethernet switches for a long time. They were generally reliable.
The only failure one of them had was a cooling fan failure. Early Fast ethernet (100Mbps) model has two small cooling fans and they stopped working. Due to fear of sudden malfunction, we removed the switch from service.
When I bought and powered up this JGS24 24-port Gigabit ethernet switch, I was surprised to hear cooling fans running. The small (40mm) fans run so fast and are noisy that it is not tolerable to have it in office room. Fortunately we now have dedicated network equipment room to isolate this noisy equipment from main office...
As usual with netgear's other product, the product looks solid. Thick metal housing and integrated power supply has been good since we have similar JFS24 100Mbps ethernet switch.
My only concern is the two cooling fans. They may fail eventually. The latest JFS24 100Mbps switch did not have fans and was very comfortable to have in office room. I don't understand why Netgear starts to use fans for their Gigabit switch
