My Experience
Neutrogenas At Home MicroDermabrasion System is an interesting skincare package. I was intrigued by the promise of rejuvenated skin. When the kit went on sale ($29.99 at Longs Drug), I purchased it and began the treatments.
I first wash my face with a gentle face wash prior to the microdermabrasion. I tie my hair back prior to using the microdermabrasion to avoid getting the cream in my hair. It was easy to pop the batteries into the applicator as it was also easy to pop on a sponge onto the applicator with a simple click.
It was strange to me to use the treatment on dry skin, but I did it anyway. I applied it to the recommend four areas: Both cheeks, forehead, and chin. The applicator and the sponge vibrate no spinning action and that is what works the cream into the skin. The cream is white, has little crystal flecks in it, and has a faint pleasant scent. I do not use too much pressure when using the applicator on my face because I did that initially and it was a bit painful. There are two speeds that you can set the applicator at high and low. I use the low because the high is much too intense for me. The application process feels a bit abrasive. It is recommended to apply it for about 1 2 minutes on skin. Rinsing the cream is difficult. It does not come off easily and after the treatment, your skin is feeling fairly raw and you do not want to rub it at all. I have found that splashing water on the cream will not rinse the cream away, so I use a wash cloth and some warm water and I leave the water running while I rinse it away with the wash cloth.
After the first treatment, my skin felt very raw. I had moisturized it with a gentle moisturizer afterwards as Neutrogena had suggested, but my skin felt very uncomfortable. I did discover much smoother skin when I ran my fingers across my facial skin, so I thought that the discomfort would pay off in the end.
Following the directions from Neutrogena, I proceeded to use the MicroDermabrasion for five nights. By the third or fourth night, a few small pimples had formed by my nose and chin. This has not happened to me since high school! I was not pleased at all. The little pimples continued for about a week after appearing and then subsided. I was pleased to stop treatment after the fifth night. I continued to use a moisturizer and a sunscreen in the day to protect my skin.
After using the product for more than a month, I do not notice much difference in my skin in terms of an improved complexion, brighter skin, or improvement in sunspots. I have a few irksome sunspots on my forehead and cheek and I was hoping that after more than four weeks of use, those spots would be diminished. No such luck. My complexion does not look dewier nor does it seem rejuvenated.
Now I use the treatment once a week for what Neutrogena calls maintenance. I find that with the once a week treatment I do not get the small pimples. Though my skin is a bit smoother immediately after use of the product, it is also very raw. The immediate but fleeting results, coupled with the discomfort and lack of long-term improvements leads me to believe that I wont be repurchasing this product after the cream is finished.
Overall Thoughts
Neutrogenas At Home MicroDermabrasion System does not deliver in terms of improving skin complexion or rejuvenating skin. Though smoother skin is felt immediately after use, it is at the price of having raw skin for a day. I cannot recommend this product because of its lack of results.
