Pros: gentle, no alcohol, moisturizes skin, inexpensive
Cons: doesn't absorbs quickly, leaves a film on skin
Several months ago, I received a pack of many Neutrogena products free with my order from drugstore.com. I was so excited with my little surprise and have been happily trying new products when I can. One of the first ones I've used is Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner.
Neutrogena has come out with a toner that doesn't contain alcohol which means your skin will not dry out when you use it. This toner claims to "remove impurities and recondition skin without stripping skin of natural moisturizers."
The toner comes in a turquoise plastic bottle with a white screw on cap. The 8.5 oz. bottle is simple and practical.
I find the smell of the toner to be very pleasant. It doesn't have that strong alcohol scent that most toners have. The scent is soft and not overwhelming.
I like to use toner twice a day. I use it after my shower in the morning and again after I wash my face at night. To use, I just moisten a cotton ball or cosmetic square and rub gently over my face.
What I noticed right away is that the toner is not absorbed into the skin quickly. It just sits on top of your skin and leaves your face feeling wet. As it dries, it leaves a sticky film on my face. I could touch my skin and it feels like my skin is coated in something. I do not enjoy this feeling. Sometimes I ended up just rinsing off the toner or slathering moisturizer over the top just to get rid of that feeling.
On the positive side, Neutrogena's toner did not dry my skin out. My face felt moisturized and soft. It also smoothed out the surface of my skin while at the same time being very gentle. I would compare this toner to Mary Kay's Freshen. If you don't want to spend the money on Mary Kay, Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner is a good alternative.
Overall, I think this is a decent toner. I like that it is alcohol free because it is extremely gentle to my skin. It moisturizes and smooths my skin. The only thing I don't like is the film left on my face. I have found that if I only use this toner at night before bed, the film doesn't bother me. I wake up with soft refreshed skin. But I can't use this toner in the morning because the film interferes with makeup.
If you need an inexpensive gentle toner, try Neutrogena Alcohol-Free Toner. If you can afford it, try Mary Kay's Freshen, but if you can't, Neutrogena offers a good drugstore version.
This toner is sold at Target, Walmart, or wherever Neutrogena is sold. It's also readily available online. Drugstore.com sells it for $5.49.
