jeffrysky's Full Review: Neutrogena Deep Clean Facial Cleanser 6.7 oz
Okay, this is going to be one category where guys obviously choose to make their appearance scarce. I guess it's the stigma of using cleansers, scrubs etc that scares guys from putting forward opinions .. Anyway, I am an Asian male 20-yr-old young adult and I would definitely would like to put forward a series of reviews on skincare in the Asian male perspective.
Acne is no stranger to me and since it's really not appropriate for guys to put on make-up, the ugly red blemishes often have to exhibited blatantly whenever I choose to leave my house. Hence it was of utmost importance I choose a tough anti-acne regime that could really give a presentable and smart complexion ... Like most teenage acne-sufferers .. here's my good piece of hArd-earned advice through years of experimenting
WHY A NEUTROGENA CLEANSER FOR ACNE?
The thing about scouting in the pharmacy for your acne problem is not about looking for one miracle cleanser that promises a whole list of wondrous properties .. e.g anti-acne , exfoliation , pore cleansing etc etc .. In fact, most of these multi-purpose cleansers end up overdrying and stinging your skin with the welter of chemical preparations .. The thing is to look for a simple but tough cleanser that effectively cleanses for sloughing off any oil or grime, to expose the affected area to any topical medication you may wish to apply later.
Its active ingredient beta-hydroxy acid is a milder choice to your AHA and goes easy with the exfoliation process. Basically, a little chemical insight.. the Greek designations "alpha-" and "beta-" on these hydroxy acids indicate the position of the "hydroxy" group on the acid molecule. The nearer the hydroxy group to the acid group on the molecule, the stronger the acid. Hence beta-acids have their hydroxyls slightly further from the acid and hence the milder action. Juz' an insight for some who wish to know more about the difference between the acids .. But the thing is that beta-hydroxies work effectively as exfoliators without the redness , and is an ideal choice for sensitive skin.
COST
Neutrogena's Deep Clean Cleanser sells as one of the more economical cleansers in Singapore at S$11+ ( US$6 ), which is a convienient choice for guys like me who need a cheap solution to a clean face. And boy, you just need a small twirl of the cleanser to get a great lather .. so the large bottle can last for AGES
APPLICATION
The thing many people may hate is the stickiness and viscocity of a cleanser, and that's probably why many people would like the light watery foamy feeling of the St. Ives' Deep Pore Cleanser. For this Neutrogena cleanser, the trick is to ease out only a small twirl of the liquid and work out a thick, foamy lather on your hands FIRST before application. By just putting a dollop of the thick liquid without proper lathering just feels like rubbing maple syrup and the cleansing effect isn't AT ALL felt. So lathering with lots of water is important, and the beta-hydroxy acid works at its optimum in a watery foam rather than a thick goo.
And erm ... if you have a problem with oily skin , use cool water only for the wash. Although warm water helps to rinse residue off more easily, cool water helps in constricting the oil glands and the pores. Heat tends to stimulate the oil glands .. tip from my doc'
EXPERIENCE
Once all foamed up, the rich foamy lather goes really easy on the skin.. but then again, i had this slight problem of dryness initially. Otherwise, you could really feel your some dry skin being sloughed off efficiently. The thing is to use your fingertips rather than your palms , and gently rub the places where you have blotches of dry skin. Now keep a control to all that rubbing' , otherwise you can get a grisly red face.
After rinsing off the lather, which came off just as easily as other cleansers, the skin felt tight and good. Okay, the exfoliation promise of this cleanser was not totally perfect. I still had some layers of dry skin around my chin area ( or could it be that i didn't really clean that area scrupulously ? hahah:=) ) But the thing about a cleanser is not about removing layers of dead skin .. that's the job of your scrub or AHA gel or whatever .. as mentioned earlier, the Neutrogena cleanser was chosen just for one main function : to get oil and grime off , and it seems the rich foamy lather has done all that.
ADVICE :
The thing most acne sufferers will do is to run down to the pharmacy and snap up ANY product that promises anti-acne properties. However, just remember that cleansing is just a simple process of getting your pores cleansed and getting off residue on the skin. It's pointless to get cleansers with anti-acne additives, especially when you are most probably going to put another dosage of PanOxyl gel or acne medication after cleansing. Beware of dry skin, which contrary to popular opinion, which is ULTRA-sensitive to break-outs. But having a slight dry and tight feeling is okay and it's a good sign that the pores are thoroughly cleansed. Remember to use a toner though ; this cleanser does nothing to close your pores, and it's really no use having clean pores when they are left open to the grime and oil.
