| luvtoshop11's Full Review: Neutrogena Healthy Face Lotion SPF 15 |
When you use drying acne treatments like I do, moisturizer is no longer an option...it becomes a necessity. There are so many different options out there though, and each one has it's drawbacks. Some aren't oil-free, some have no SPF, etc. After trying many different ones, although it's not perfect, this is one of my favorites.
Neutrogena Healthy Skin Face Lotion (NHSFL) comes in a convenient pump bottle which turns to lock for travel. The price is a bit high for a drugstore lotion, but it does last quite a long time so it's worth it. It has a scent, but it's fresh if anything...not very floral. It's heavy initially when you first apply it, but fades quickly and doesn't come back to visit you during the day.
I use this in the morning only, since I don't need SPF at night. They do make a night version, but I haven't tried it. Every morning after I wash my face, I apply an adequate amount of NHSFL. They say you need to use 2 pumps, which I find excessive. As with many AHA formulations, it sort of 'lathers' if that makes sense, so if you used 2 pumps you would be trying to rub it in for hours.
It takes a little bit longer to soak in than most lotions, but not that long. One notable thing though, is that it does sting. Many people don't think about that when trying an alpha hydroxy lotion and it's a shock at first, LOL. When my skin is in good shape I don't notice it, but if I have an open blemish or a tiny scratch or scrape I can definitely feel it. It's mild though, and fades quickly so it's not that bad.
What I did notice about this lotion that I dislike, is that for an oil-free lotion it is really greasy! It definitely leaves a shiny film on your skin, however that's easily taken care of by a quick blot with a paper towel or piece of toilet paper. I would prefer if I didn't have to do that, but the benefits outweigh the one drawback.
It does a great job of moisturizing and even gets rid of any flakies I may have, which is great since I use benzoyl peroxide for my acne, which can make me quite dry and dull at times. The specific AHA in this product is glycolic acid, and I believe it's between 8-9%. It definitely works, because as soon as I started using NHSFL I noticed my skin looking much more even and radiant. Even some of my old acne scars were fading!
The HUGE benefit for me is getting minimum required SPF 15 along with glycolic acid in one quick and easy step. It's a 3-in-1 product basically, which saves me lots of time in the morning, since I dont have to stand around layering things and giving each time to dry.
Lastly, I think this is important to mention since so many moisturizers don't, it works well with makeup. I usually apply this, blot, and then apply my foundation primer. Even though it's pretty greasy, I haven't noticed an increase in the times I have to blot throughout the day. I have also used it with some of my more full coverage foundations, without blotting or using a foundation primer and it works well like that too.
Overall...if you're looking for a good moisturizer with a gentle AHA and a minimum SPF, go for this one. I've tried a few different AHA moisturizers out there, and for the money I think this one is the best. I'm on my third bottle now, so I can speak from definite experience.
