Pros: Lovely colors, no offensive odor or taste
Cons: Not really lipgloss... does that count?
The Bottom Line: I don't care what Neutrogena thinks, it's not a gloss. But it's a nice liquid lip color that comes in wonderfully soft, natural colors.

| tlbwriter's Full Review: Neutrogena Moistureshine Lip Gloss |
Neutrogena’s Moisture Shine lipgloss is one of those products that doesn’t dazzle you when you first use it, but slowly and sneakily it becomes one of your mainstays.
Moisture Shine is a wand-style gloss, and is packaged in an interesting rectangular tube. It has a faint fruity fragrance, and though others have complained of the taste, I haven’t found it to have a noticeable taste. Perhaps it depends on the color. Neutrogena claims it moisturizes and firms your lips with special “botanical ingredients.” OK, my garbage is also full of “botanical ingredients,” and I haven’t noticed any long-lasting effects from using this lip color. But I don’t care, since that’s generally not what I expect from my cosmetics.
Moisture Shine comes in eight shades (which are rather inaccurately displayed on the Neutrogena website). I found them all to be attractive and very natural-looking, mostly neutral shades, with a good range of light to dark (well, as good as you can get in eight colors). The color I selected is “Dreamy,” which looks like a silvery beige-mauve in the tube.
I found it easy to apply, and slightly thicker than I expected. It’s not as thick and heavy as the goopy Maybelline Lip Polish, but still thicker than typical lipgloss. Moisture Shine is also more opaque than typical lipgloss, and not as shiny. A second coat makes it shinier, with a wet look, but two coats can get awfully goopy. If I ran the world (and wouldn’t we all be happier if I did?), I would call it a liquid lipstick, not a gloss.
For me, “Dreamy” is the perfect “my lips but better” color. It’s slightly darker than my own lips, and the silvery shimmer is just barely noticeable. The shimmer is a little more obvious when I layer Moisture Shine over a darker lipstick, but it’s still very subtle, and not glittery at all. However, I feel the Moisture Shine is really too heavy to wear over lipstick (another reason I wouldn’t consider it a gloss). It feels just barely sticky… something I wouldn’t have noticed unless I were looking for it.
Moisture Shine’s wearability is typical of a liquid lipcolor. It lasts longer than gloss, but it comes off on everything.
So why is it so special? Why do I keep bypassing more expensive lip colors to wear this one? I think it’s the color. Since it’s the perfect goes-with-everything neutral, I keep reaching for it. It’s especially nice for those times when I’m wearing dramatic eye makeup and want to wear a more subdued lip, or when I’m going for a natural look. The soft color and shiny finish enhance my lips without screaming for attention. And since the colors are so soft and natural, I think there’s a “my lips but better” shade to go with any complexion.
At six dollars a tube, it’s a small investment – how often have you spent more than that on lunch? I’m looking forward to adding more of these pretty, natural colors to my collection.
