Aside from the well known amber colored bar of glycerin soap introduced in the '60s, it was with the Norwegian Formula Hand Cream that Neutrogena's widely popular appeal was born. Several years later, the brand has introduced several offshoots to the original success story, Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Body Moisturizer, Foot Cream, and Body Emulsion.
Packaging and Appearance:
Neutrogena Body Moisturizer is packaged in a tall, slim, white bottle with red and blue copy and a lockable pump top. Although the sturdy plastic packaging betrays its mass market roots, the product does look slightly more refined than its drug store cousins under the Vaseline or Jergens line, largely due to the simple red, white, and blue color scheme (referencing a Norwegian heritage) and the elimination of any unnecessary text on the front of the bottle.
The lotion itself has a soothing and even somewhat luxuriant consistency somewhere between a gel and a cream, and yet it absorbs within seconds, leaving only the most pleasant feeling of moisturization and hydration behind. The pump top dispenses adequately and generously, and perhaps my only complaint with the product is that a quick push on the pump sometimes shoots the lotion a little too far and a little too abundantly, possibly due to some slight clogging within.
The moisturizer is available either fragrance-free or with fragrance, and the scent of the latter is very subtle, clean, and refreshing. I seriously doubt that it would be noticeable by most people, particularly if you aren't prone to offering your arm or other body part up for a deep and prolonged nasal inhalation to a perfect stranger. I find that one real perk to using Neutrogena Body Moisturizer is that the scent is so unobtrusive as not to interfere with my wearing of other fragrances, such as perfume or eau de toilette. Orchestrating fragrance layers by combining such products as scented body lotions, powders, hair treatments, and perfume can be as frustrating and challenging as finding the perfect pairing of food and wine. At least with Neutrogena, I know I've eliminated one source of fragrance conflict.
Product Claims and Product Reality:
The copy on the back of the bottle claims the following:
Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Body Moisturizer hydrates skin with therapeutic moisture levels that last for 12 hours. But unlike some therapeutic lotions that may leave your skin feeling greasy, Neutrogena Body Moisturizer absorbs instantly with no heavy after feel. Skin is refreshed, replenished -- feels soft and smooth.
My first impression of this moisturizer was the same as my most recent impression: Neutrogena Body Moisturizer is an outstanding lotion for general body use. It's appropriate for almost all skin types, even dry skin in the middle of winter. Key ingredients glycerin, aloe extract, and lanolin heal, soothe, and replenish moisture, leaving skin refreshed, hydrated, and not at all prone to itchiness. Even in an overheated, low humidity indoor climate, my skin is completely comfortable with one morning application to my legs, arms, shoulders, and torso. Application is easy, as the lotion smoothes on easily and absorbs quickly. There's virtually no waiting time after application until you can don your clothes.
