| rockstarmeghan's Full Review: Neutrogena Pore Refining Mattifier Shine Control G... |
I have oily skin by nature. I'll admit it. I'm not ashamed. I wasn't blessed with matte, poreless skin--but I can fake it with Neutrogena Pore Refining Mattifier. Since I started using this product 4 months ago, you couldn't make me give it up for anything.
I used to take huge steps towards controlling my oily skin--I used bone-dry makeup, went through oil-blotting sheets at an alarming rate, washed my face three times a day. Nothing helped. Mine was a shiny, shiny existence until I discovered this product.
I purchased this product at a local drugstore, paying about $9.00 without tax. It's part of Neutrogena's pore refining line of skincare. I haven't had much experience with the rest of the line, so I can't offer an opinion or recommendation for it.
The mattifier comes in a slim, elegant grayish tube. It seems deceptively small at first--I believe my first reaction was to curse at the small amount of the product, which comes in at .5 ounces--however, the package claims that it is a concentrated silicone solution and doesn't take much to get a full application. And that's certainly true!
I used it the first time with trepidation, as part of my morning routine--after I had washed my face and moisturized I squeezed out miniscule dots of the mattifier onto my index finger and applied it to my nose--the oiliest culprit of all. To my happy surprise, my nose was instantly mattified and silky to the touch. Heartened, I applied touches all over my face, put on foundation as usual, and went to school. I didn't expect the mattifier to last long, so I packed along my trusty blotting sheets to clean up the oil slick that was going to invariably occur around 2nd period.
To even more of my surprise, I never used a single blotting paper that day. My skin stayed completely matte until 6th period ended. I was pleased beyond belief.
Neutrogena makes several claims for the product, and I can verify them all (claims from neutrogena.com):
It works better than a powder to prevent shine from breaking through, so make-up looks fresh all day.
This is definitely true. I far preferred my single morning application to several reapplications of powder, which can look heavy and masklike on me after a while.
Its dual-action formula transforms into a silky matte finish the moment you apply it.
This is really true! I used to sometimes have problems with the overly dry skin (yet still, I was oily!) on my cheeks or chin flaking off, but not anymore. The product softens considerably, giving my skin a healthy look as well as a matte one!
Skin is smoother and more even—instantly. And shine is controlled all day.
As I mentioned, the product lasted me from my 7 AM zero hour all the way through the end of 6th period at 3:00. My skin stayed smooth and soft all day, and not a speck of oil dared ooze onto my face.
Neutrogena also claims the product is non-comedogenic, hypoallergenic, and oil-free (of course!) Thus far, I'd have to agree. My skin has certainly not gotten worse from use--if anything it has improved! I haven't had any reactions to the ingredients and there's not a bit of oil in the formulation. If you are allergic, though, the ingredients are as follows: cyclopentasiloxane, polysilicone 11, dimethicone, silica, neopentyl glycol dioctanoate, bisabolol, and fragrance. A word about that so-called fragrance--I detected only a trace of scent from the product. It smells fresh and crisp, so I don't mind it at all. Even if you do mind fragrance, you shouldn't be deterred from purchasing this.
Overall, Neutrogena Pore Refining Mattifier has made me one happy girl. It controls my oily skin, helps my makeup stay on for marathon-type hours, and applies easily without mess. It lasts for longer than you'd expect as well--I've been using mine for 4 months now and I haven't even finished off half.
I think the product ranges from 9-14 US dollars. Not even a risky investment from my perspective. I am completely and totally satisfied with the job the product does and I would recommend it to anyone who's spent any amount of time lamenting their oil-blessed face.
