I used to frequent my local discount stores for the cheapest sunscreen available. I usually needed a five gallon drum. I am blue eyes and fair skin, as are my two children. We went through a large quantity of sunscreen. I used to buy NO AD which was very cheap and came in an assortment of strengths.
Last year, my son was being treated for Acne and was put on some heavy duty medications. Things like Erythromycin and Retin A. The combinations of all these drugs make the skin super sensitive to the sun.
At first, my son told me he felt a slight burning. I thought it was the acne medicine and kept applying the screens for the sun. It progressed to the point that his skin started to peel off on his neck. He started to look like a burn victim.
After several visits to the emergency room , and three dermatologists , as well as, a skin biopsy the conclusion was that it could have been a reaction to the drugs in combination with the type of sunscreen.
My dermatologist advised the use of Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock.
It comes in a SPF of 17. The nice part is it is one of the only sunscreens without any chemical additives. It also does not burn the eyes. I just hate that. It is hypo-allergenic, and great for people with acne. It will not clog the pores of your skin. It is also fragrance free for those sensitive to perfumes. It comes in a lotion form and needs to be rubbed in throughly. You will have to reapply frequently.
This lotion is not waterproof, so if you swim , reapply after toweling off.
The downside is it is expensive. It can run upwards of seven to twelve dollars per 4 FL OZ . Pricey, but when you think of the potential hazards of using some of the cheapest brands, there really is no comparison.
So slather on the sunblock and pass me that pina colada will you?
