Pros: Gentle for everyday use Really does smooth out skin Unclogs pores Seems sturdy
Cons: Cleanser not as refreshing or tingling as advertised Not much lather in cleanser
The Bottom Line: Go ahead, let your face surf The Wave! Buy it on sale, though. I think it's worth about $10, which is less than the $17 I paid for it.
jenniferkateab's Full Review: Neutrogena Wave Facial System
Does the Neutrogena Wave facial system live up to its promises? I tested The Wave for three weeks and came to my own conclusions about this vibrating cleaner for the face. Here's the scoop (no VANs or surfboard required!) Hey good lookin'
The Wave is a cute, white and pink, plastic facial cleaning device. It's battery operated with 1 AA battery that came with the unit. The Wave is ergonomically shaped and fits well in the palm of my hand. There aren't any moving parts ~ you just press the puffy pink button on the side once to turn it on, and once again to turn it off. It comes with single-use disposable pads that stick on easily like velcro. The pads contain a glycerin based cleanser with citric acid, salicylic acid and menthol in a sodium-laureth-sulfate base (and other hard to pronounce ingredients).
Turn me on, baby!
When you turn on the wave, the product vibrates in a gentle but persistent manner until you turn it off. You should wet your face and then saturate the cleaning pad with water thoroughly before massaging your face with it. I have used the wave both in, and out of the shower. I prefer using it in the shower ~ I seem to get more lather out of the pad that way. Also, in the shower I will "wave" my face first, and then my neck, decolletage and even under my scalp to get all those areas clean and smooth. The vibrations are gentle but seem to activate the Wave's gentle cleaning power. For areas like my nose, that tend to get clogged pores, I'll let the wave hover for a few extra seconds to let the vibrations work on stubborn pores. When I'm done, I just throw away the pad and the dirt and germs are never to be seen again.
The Wave: claims vs. reality
"Tingly, cool foam penetrates deeper - 100% of women showed significantly deeper pore cleansing"
Well, I do feel my pores are cleaner and less clogged, especially on my nose. The first time I used it, my face seemed so smooth, I thought I had left my old skin behind and found another one! I don't think there's enough foaming action, though. I also don't really notice a tingle, and I think the cleanser that comes inside the pads could be improved to make this claim ring a little more true.
"Gentle vibrating motion stimulates skin's surface- feel the massaging action open pores to remove more dirt, oil and makeup"
I feel this statement is fair and accurate. My pores do look cleaner and I don't notice makeup residue on my face after using the Wave. Also, I notice my skin seems to look clearer and feel smoother all day, and rough patches of dead skin are much fewer and less noticeable. I do recommend following up with a great moisturizer. I still need makeup to cover my flaws after using The Wave, so it's not going to transform you into a flawless creature unless you're really lucky!
"Softly textured pads sweep away layers of dead skin cells- see immediately softer, smoother skin after just 1 use"
Softer, smoother skin was definitely noticeable after the first use. As with most facial products, I seem to notice the greatest, most beneficial difference after the first few uses. This is definitely true with The Wave. After using for a few weeks, I see that my skin is definitely smoother and brighter, but the "amazing" difference I saw in the beginning is less noticeable for me over time. That's all for now, folks! My Conclusion and recommendation...
I'm glad I waited a few weeks to give my impressions of The Wave. Overall, I am happy that I purchased this product and I like the way my skin feels after I use it. It seems sturdy and well-made and I'm glad it's safe for the shower, because I think it works most efficiently and lathers best there. I wish the cleanser ingredients were a little more tingly, like they are supposed to be, but after using it for a few weeks, I'm convinced it is truly gentle enough for daily use. I have also tried the shine-free blemish-free pads, and those lather even less than the pads which come with The Wave. Should your face surf the wave? Sure, catch a ride!
By the way, Happy 10th Anniversary, Epinions! You've been very good to me, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my opinionated voice with consumers who want to hear what ordinary folks like me have to say.
