dmarusz's Full Review: Neverwinter Nights (PC) for Windows
We are going on a classic Dungeons and Dragons adventure. I can't wait to assemble my party, work everyone's strengths and weaknesses, and then go out into our isometric world just like Baldur's Gate (BG), and solve some super story. Wait. That's not it. I don't get a party. I don't get the classic Baldur's Gate graphics. It looks more like an action game than a Role-Playing Game (RPG). This stinks ... or does it?
Well, losing a lot of the elements that I so loved in Icewind Dale and BG, is a downer. My guy/hero is of that typical action prismatic look. Where are the soft edges? He runs around with ... what is that ... a minion of some sort. That is no compensation for my crazy party that seems to never get along. I can't approve of this game. So, why do I keep playing?
Well, it is kind of fun to hack and slash some of these evil doers, or evil-don'ters if I choose. The story is actually entertaining. Even though everything has a hard edge, the effects and colors when I use my powers are pretty. No, wait, hypnotizing.
I can't be deterred. Sure they're pretty but that doesn't make up for the fact that everything is hard and thin. I walk into a room and the wall looks to be stone, but when I truly observe it, it is like a sheet of paper with a stone texture on it. I want the feel of girth in my stone wall. Maybe I should start an activist group.
And let's get back to that game play. It's fun beating up on a boss but what does he drop ... a +1 sword. I might as well let him live. I reload and kill him again, and then I get some second rate armor. Maybe if I keep reloading, I'll get something good... (long pause) ...Well, I got something good finally, but now I'm bored. I think I'll take a break...
... Now that I'm back, I kind of get the story, and there are truly some good RPG elements in here. I can answer stuff according to how high my intelligence is. I can wow 'em with my lore, too. My character does grow and progresses with the help of quests and experience. There is some control to this game, and I like it.
No. No. I'm falling for it again. This is just a watered down version of the original D&D games. Heck, I can't even control my minion/hero for hire. He's not even too bright. He usually gets a beating or he blows all of his spells on the first goblin we meet. Might as well fight alone. I'm not even sure what's in his inventory. I can't steal it either. Ah, the pains of being solitary.
What? The end! What is this feeling? I think that I've enjoyed it ... But, do I admit it to anyone? It might be shameful. The RPGer's would never let me live it down. I guess as a compromise I could write a review on the ups-and-downs of the game... Nah ...
