The New Balance 761 running shoes are excellent if you run on a track or on concrete/asphalt. I’ve trained for the Long Beach and Los Angeles marathons in these shoes and have had no problems. I used to train in Ascii Gels but found them to be too thin and flimsy. Nike running shoes felt good but tended to be a bit heavy. The reason that I like the New Balance shoes are that they are light and tend to be extremely durable for running in all terrain condition – i.e. moisture and hot weather.
The one thing that will go out on the shoe is the insole. I punish the heck out of my running shoes but after 5-6 months the insole begins to deteriorate. But I found that purchasing a silicon based insole (20 bucks at footlocker – and they’ll replace it up to one year with receipt) makes these shoes as good as new once again. I recommend this shoe for the following type of people:
Cross-country runners
Marathoners
Joggers
Tennis practice
However I wouldn’t recommend these shoes if you are into sprinting and time-trials because the grip does not hold on take-off. The base is smooth and good for overall running but not takeoff positions.
Another good thing I notice about these shoes is that they have proportioned balance on the base of your feet. Ultimately it feels that the shoe conforms and molds itself to your style after a week and fits like a glove. If you run, jog, or cross-train do not risk hurting your back because much of “runner knee” and lower back pain are associated to shoes that lack proper fitting and support.
New Balance has made an excellent overall running shoe in the 761 because it’s affordable, durable, and extremely flexible compared to many of the shoes I’ve tried out. I would recommend these shoes to anyone who fits the description I have previously mentionned.
