| RudeDawg's Full Review: New Balance 803 Running Shoes |
I purchased these shoes initially for cross country. In the shoe store, I happened to meet the captain of a college cross country team and he recommended these shoes. They fit me well and were very stylish, so I immediately bought them. I also bought a pair of Reeboks for every day use.
The 803's held up fantastic, even after running through bad weather and terrain. They really lived up to their "All Terrain" status. Even after almost 3 months of wearing these shoes, they show little signs of wear.
In addition, they are amazingly comfortable. Reebok DMX's and Nikes with the air pockets feel great in the store, but after a couple of weeks they get uncomfortable. The 803's are more comfortable then they were in the store. I soon abandoned my Reeboks and used my 803's both for every day use and for cross country.
The 803's have good ankle support (not good enough for basketball, but they are very good for running shoes). They also have sufficient padding in the heel for long distance runners. My arches are moderately high, and these shoes fit well. I don't know how someone with high arches would fit in the 803's. You can be a casual runner or a serious runner and you will love these shoes.
Now it is basketball season and I am wearing And 1 Tattoo Mid's for b-ball. It is a drastic change from the 803's. I now realize how great the 803s breathe. After playing for about an hour, the inside of the And 1s gets very hot and at the end of practice my feet feel horrible. This never happened with New Balance.
As an added bonus, they are made in America, unlike Nike and Reebok. The price is amazingly low considering this, much lower than the top-of-the-line Nikes.
Update - 2/20/01
I have had these shoes now for about seven months now. I have worn them everyday and there are very few signs of wear. The glue that holds the front of the shoe's out-sole to its mid-sole is slowly deteriorating. Also, the laces are fringed. Other than that, I can't find any problems with these shoes.
