| jps246's Full Review: Robert E. Cahill - New England's Ghostly Haunts |
BOO!
Scared yet?
New Englands Ghostly Haunts is a short collection of tales from various haunted locations throughout New England. In a short 48 pages, Robert Ellis Cahill tells the tales of ten different locations that have supposed supernatural occurrences. These stories include:
The Screeching Lady of Marblehead
The Wild Green Mountain Boys
Where to Go Ghost Hunting
Warehams Musical Ghost
Whitmans Haunted Bed
Ghosts At Sea
Maines Haunted Inn
Americas First Ghost
Salems Haunted Houses
New Hampshires Good Ghosts.
Researched by the author, the tales included in New Englands Ghostly Haunts are as factual and documented by Cahill, who has spent over 25 years researching ghostly phenomena throughout New England.
Some of the stories you may have heard (I was familiar with the haunted houses in Salem and the story of the Mary Celeste at sea, but otherwise they were new to me), but they are all interesting. I found the hair on the back of my neck sticking up at times and a few goosebumps here and there. I did manage to sleep after finishing the book though.
The most interesting story I found was the one regarding where to find ghosts in New England. Before this book, I did not know that Dudleytown in Connecticut was the spookiest place in New England. Now that I know, Im going to search it out and see whats so spooky about it.
The other stories are just as entertaining and provide an excellent starting point for anyone who is looking to further explore the supernatural in New England.
Details
Coming in at only 48 pages, each story is at most 4 or 5 pages in length. Black and white photographs and/or reproductions accompany some of the stories in the book. The writing is clear and to the point, but leaves that proverbial door open enough to make the reader wonder about the story. Like I said before, the author has researched and documented (as best as can be with a story of the supernatural) these stories and should you go to the various locations, the book provides an interesting background for your visit. The book also includes an extensive bibliography that should point anyone who wants to do more reading on the topics in the right direction.
My Feelings
Im getting a little freaked out here
well seriously, I have always had a soft spot for stories of the supernatural and New Englands Ghostly Haunts is an enjoyable diversion for me. Not having been at all the locations in the book, I cant vouch on whether or not youll see a ghost (and that probably depends on whether or not you believe in them), but if you are at all interested in the supernatural and New England, this is a worthy book for your collection.
Its not the end-all of ghost stories (there are too many in New England for one book), but it is an excellent primer that anyone should enjoy.
