| LonghornMan's Full Review: New Era Houston Astros Authentic Collection Perfor... |
This is the first fitted Houston Astros cap that I have purchased, despite the fact that Ive been a fan of the team ever since I can remember. They are my favorite National League team. Dont get me wrong, the Texas Rangers will always be my all-time favorite team in Major League Baseball because I was born and raised in Dallas. However, when it comes to National League baseball, I will always be cheering for the Astros. The Lone Star Series that is taking place right now will be one of the few instances that I wont be cheering for the Astros. With any luck at all, my dream of a Lone Star State World Series pitting the Rangers against the Astros will one day come true. Stop snickering
miracles never cease.
The Cap
The Houston Astros New Era fitted batting practice cap is an undeniably sharp looking piece of headgear. The portion of the cap that covers ones head is brick red and features the trademark Astros star in gold on the center of the cap. The back of the cap has the Major League Baseball logo centered between the back two panels. This is the same cap Major League Baseball players wear for batting practice so that their game caps are not ruined with salt stains from sweating after taking cuts in the batting cage.
The cap is 100% polyester and according to the laundering instructions is dry clean only. Like all modern baseball caps, the dome of the hat is made up of six panels. On the inside of the cap, the six panels are reinforced with three black polyester strips that have the New Era logo and 59 Fifty printed in white. There is a ventilation hole finished with stitching in each panel of the dome of the cap. Where the six panels meet at the top of the cap, there is a metal button that is covered in black polyester mesh.
The front two panels of the cap are reinforced with hard, white thickly woven polyester to keep the shape. Embroidered between the two front panels of the cap is the Houston Astros logo; the open sided, three point, 10 karat gold colored star with brick red and black trim. The brim is jet black in color and has mesh fabric on the top and regular polyester on the bottom. The fabric is secured to the brim with eight rows of stitches.
The inner headband of the cap is jet black in color and made of smooth, woven polyester that is quite comfortable on the forehead and brow. There are three tags sewn on the back portion of the headband that correspond with the back two panels of the cap. Centered between the stitching of the back two panels is a black tag with the New Era logo in blue and white with a red rectangular box next to it that reads, MADE IN THE USA, in white lettering with, SINCE 1920, in white lettering directly under it.
Holding the cap with the brim facing you, looking at the inside of the cap, there is a black tag on the back left panel that has the MLB logo with Authentic Collection, embroidered directly under it. Authentic, is in red cursive lettering with white trim and Collection, is in white lettering centered below it. On the right panel there is a black tag with a red embroidered rectangular box that says, Original in white lettering with the centimeter measurement of the cap under it in white. Next to that is a blue box with the size of the cap in white.
Due to its mesh construction, the cap allows your head to stay considerably cooler than your standard fitted Major League Baseball cap. This makes this style of cap extremely desirable for those of us down here in Texas that must endure extreme heat and humidity to watch our favorite teams play baseball.
I am extremely pleased with my fitted Astros New Era batting practice cap thus far. I highly recommend this cap to all Houston Astros fans or anyone who wants to represent Houston with a stylish and affordable ball cap.
I paid $14.99 plus $4.99 postage and handling for my cap on Ebay about a month ago. I wouldnt say I got a bargain, but $19.98 was a fair price considering the fact that the cap can retail for as much as $29.99. My advice is to shop around and not pay anymore than $20.00 for the cap.
My Sports Apparel Philosophy
The only time youll catch me wearing a Major League Baseball cap representing a team other than the Rangers, Astros, Senators (franchise that became the Rangers), or Colt .45s (became the Astros) is if Im sporting a throwback. I dont think this is being untrue to my two favorite teams, since my throwback caps were purchased to match my throwback jerseys that pay homage to baseball greats such as Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente. Since both of these legendary players have long passed away and no doubt served as role models for countless ballplayers that have played for my two favorite teams, I see no conflict of interest.
I am a staunch opponent of fair weather fans who fail to cheer for their team and wear their teams merchandise until they become frontrunners. They are equally as despicable as those that buy and wear the caps and merchandise of the front running teams as soon as they look like they are the most heavily favored team to win a championship. My advice is to be a real fan and represent for your city, state, alma mater or country no matter what their record might be. The lean times make the playoff appearances and championships all the sweeter. Go Astros!
