User Rating: Excellent
Pros:Great price, size, and detail, moving parts work easily and rolls nicely.
Cons:Lacks some coloration, trailer interior is a bit of a let down.
The Bottom Line: New Ray's Volvo-VN780 is another great toy with impressive size, detail, durability, value, and price. It looks great displayed and would be a great gift for truck enthusiasts.
*If you read my review of New Rays Peterbilt 379 tractor trailer you may find several similarities with that in this review, as these are similar products. I would encourage you to scroll down to the "The Box" section below and begin reading from there as everything to that point is mostly repetition. Thanks for reading and enjoy.

New Ray Toys has hit the big league's of commercial truck replication with a new line of Long Haulers, a collection of 1:32 scale tractor trailers. With manufacturer's including Peterbilt, Freightliner, Mack, International, and Kenworth; New Ray has a well rounded set of semi trucks for ages 3 and up. Each truck is die cast metal with plastic parts and a plastic trailer.
New Ray is a maker of generally low priced, but more than adequately detailed toy cars, motorcycles, planes, tractor trailers, helicopters, and pretty much anything else having to do with transportation. They have remote control vehicles, including an electric version of the truck I am reviewing here. Most vehicles are built of a combination of die cast metal and plastics and range in scale from 1:50 or smaller up past 1:24 with prices ranging from a few dollars to over $50. After looking around the house for a bit, I was surprised to find how many toys had the New Ray box logo on the bottom. I have found their products to consistently be affordable, while still detailed enough to hold my interest.
Contact information for New Ray is as follows:

I will note that the website, while informative, is very slow to load and requires Flash Player 8 or higher to be viewed. Most product lines are represented with drop-down menu's and pictures and information for many of their products is available on the website. The site does not have every product currently available and took several minutes to load even on my 10 mbps Internet connection. If you have a fast connection speed and are willing to wait, the website is a great resource for company information.
Housing a toy this size is a big job that takes a big box. Stretching nearly 2 feet long, 7 inches tall, and 4 inches wide the red and black box allows for easy viewing of the toy through a plastic window. The truck is securely held in place inside the box with two screws and 5 length's of twist ties along its base. A large plastic holder in the shape of the truck also helps keep it in place during transport. Removal from the box took about 10 minutes total and requires a scissors and small, Phillips head, screwdriver. The box includes a proclamation of ages 8+ indicates that the toy is made in China.
Overview Of Toy
Excepting a few Nylint and Jada offerings, this Volvo VN780 is one of the largest tractor trailer toys available. The sheer size alone is enough to entice wonderment and delight out of most children and the relatively realistic truck and trailer make it appealing to any big rig fan. The tractor is a Volvo VN780 and the trailer is a standard 40' container like those typically seen on any highway. Both truck and trailer have rubber tires (yes all 18 are there) and opening doors. I was amazed to find that, despite a slight shimmy in the forward most axle, the truck rolls more smoothly and quietly than most of my 1:18 scale cars. Even more amazing is that the Peterbilt model I mentioned in the prelude to this review has the same shimmy in the front axle but does roll slightly quieter as the trailer doesn't vibrate as much while rolling. Truck and trailer take very little effort to move and roll for decent distance with no parts dragging, most bumps are manage-able as the trailer rides pretty high off of the ground.
The large, white, plastic, container trailer has an opening door on the back side that opens as two panels, outward from the center (just like a real trailer). I say it is large because it is over 15" long, 5.75" tall, and 3.25" wide, yet weighs less than 2 pounds. Metal tandem axles hold 1.5" diameter, rubber, tires with plastic, chrome center caps that look like the real thing.
The trailer is relatively plain and featureless on the sides excepting a large Volvo logo and a repeating design that runs the length of the trailer. There are a few variations in the design on the trailer, one is pictured in the item description on this page and the other (the one I bought) is a series of black, vertical lines intersecting three, horizontal, red, lines that run the length of the trailer. 6 lights, 3 rows of rivets, and 5 raised lines are also molded into the white plastic of the trailer. All of these features add to the level of realism and value of the trailer overall.
The front of the trailer has rounded edges with 2 rows of rivets running along the bottom and a large light molded into the lower center portion. The top of the trailer is flat without any real detail. Five lights along the top of the rear of the trailer crown the large rear doors. Small hinges and handles are molded along both doors and relatively inconspicuous handles are set into the top and bottom of each door to allow you to open them. The doors are easy to open but do sometimes stick a bit on the bottoms. At the bottom of the trailer, a black bumper extends downward below 2 molded tail lights.
The inside of the trailer is lined with 8 plastic columns along the walls to provide stability and support throughout the trailer. The floor is black and all walls are white. Interior space is hampered by the support columns, which, also detract from the toys realism. But there is still enough space inside to hold smaller toys or 1/32 scale toy cars.
The bottom of the trailer features 8 tires on tandem axles at the rear. Each tire features a realistic tread pattern and black mud flaps hang down just below the bumper to add a touch of realism. The bumper is held on by two screws and two more hold the stand at the front of the trailer, that does not fold down more screws (one for each interior column) hold the trailer together quite securely.
A series of 43 grooves extending the width of the trailer run from front to back. A metal pin drops down about a quarter inch to hitch the trailer to the Volvo tractor. All New Ray Long Haulerstractor trailers share the same hitch design so you can interchange different trucks with different trailers in the line. I have successfully connected this trailer with the Peterbilt truck and Volvo without any problem.
My only complaints about the trailer are that all lights are body color instead of being shaded red or orange. I also dislike the fact that the stand doesn't retract and that the columns inside the trailer take up so much space.
The Volvo model VN780 is very large and tall with a charachteristic grille including a center diagonal line. The tractor includes a sleeper cab with an air dam including a sun roof. The truck is a deep red color with chrome accents and black air vents and side mirrors. Unlike the trailer, the cab is made partly of die-cast metal, but like the trailer, the rest is plastic.
A large chrome bumper with inset clear lenses sits below the large, chrome, grille. Large, modern-looking, headlights sit next to each side of the hood where an indented U-shape catches your eye. A large, wing, spoiler casts shadows over the vertical windshield and houses 5 indentations representing lights. Two chrome exhaust stacks peek above the aerodynamic air dam and both side mirrors seem securely attached and difficult to break.
Most of the tractor is a single shade of red in this case but a blue, white, and black model are also available. A realistic, r-shaped vent is molded in plastic on either side of the hood, just above the headlights. Door handles, sleeper cab windows, and lights are molded in plastic. The windshield is plastic but the main, front, windows are cutouts in the opening doors. Two steps with chrome, plastic, diamond, plating allow the "driver" to reach the front door and two more, similar though smaller, steps allow access to a rear platform. Chrome fuel tanks are hidden behind a body panel, but the fact that they are still included despite the fact that they are barely visible, makes the toy more realistic.
From behind, detail is still far from lacking with a diamond plate floor extending out toward a black, plastic, hitch that is centered over the 8 rear tires. The whole truck looks very much in proportion and the transition from metal to plastic painted parts is hardly noticeable. Two chrome exhaust stacks face backward from the truck and look very real with a chrome cross-beam supporting them. At the very end of the truck, more mud flaps are molded behind the rear tires.
Both cabin doors open wide to reveal a black, plastic, interior with two captains chairs and a large steering wheel. The dashboard is black, with molded glove box and digital instrumentation panel. Jake brake, gear shift selector lever, and even a cup holder are among the details present in the cab. Interior detail is certainly more than adequate for a toy of this price. The windshield wipers are even there, molded into the windows clear plastic.
The underside of the truck includes two differentials attached by a large, partially rotatable, drive shaft. Front leaf springs are molded into the truck and metal axles support it. At least 20 screws can be seen along the bottom of the truck, leaving me with the impression that the main body is toughly constructed. When truck and trailer are connected they span over 22.5" in length. The truck itself is 10.5" long, 5.5" tall, and about 3.5" wide from mirror to mirror.
I have a few complaints about the Volvo VN780 toy. First, as with the trailer, the lights are not colored; including the five lining the top of the cab. Second, the front axle is stationary and does not steer as with other toys this size. Finally, the front axle has a bit of a bend to it and doesn't roll as balanced as the other 4 axles (though this doesn't seem to affect the trucks ability to roll straight). Some parts including the side mirrors, may be easy enough for small children to break off and choke on, so I encourage observance of the 3+ age recommendation, and believe that children above the age of 8 might be the best age range for this toy.
As I mentioned at the top of this review, I also had the opportunity to review New Ray's Peterbilt 379 with cattle hauler trailer. Here I will give my comparison of the two toys.
Delicate Parts The Volvo model doesn't suffer from as many breakable parts as the Peterbilt. The mirrors are more securely attached and the fuel tanks, exhaust stacks, and bumper are better shielded from damage. The trailer is also thicker, with less holes and more support leading to my conclusion that it is far more durable.
Factory Defects The Peterbilt trailer was also plagued with some defects, which, I outlined in that review. The trailer with this Volvo truck had no scratches, cracks, or other defects present.
Coloration Both Peterbilt and Volvo models have a single color for the truck and another one for the trailer with little contrast. The clear lenses on the Volvo truck do add to its realism and look better than the molded chrome lenses on the Peterbilt.
Hitching Device The hitch on this toy is very easy to use, you simply slide the trailer toward the tractor until it makes an audible click and it is attached. Pulling up on the trailer will easily separate the two. I complained about the ease with which the trailer and truck would detach when reviewing the Peterbilt, but the Volvo holds together much better. It is a little harder to click the Volvo container trailer and truck together because the hitching device seems a bit stiffer.
Overall the durability of the Volvo model is far superior. Detail is still there but in some areas (especially the trailer) less detail makes the truck a bit more boring to look at. A plain container trailer is less interesting in general than a cattle trailer in my opinion, but the lack of factory defects in the Volvo model make up the difference for me.
The New Ray Volvo tractor trailer is the right size to wow all who get it as a gift or buy it. It is very durable and detailed for its low price of only $12.99 at Farm and Fleet as part of their Holiday sale and I have seen it list on Ebay for about $17. The trucks are very unique in size and detail, and the ability to connect different trucks with different trailers is a huge advantage. I think the Volvo tractor trailer is a great value and I recommend it for children a bit to young to give the Peterbilt the care it needs to stay in one piece.
