| jo.com's Full Review: Newcastle Brown Ale England 18.6oz |
Six of us went out to dinner last weekend. Three of us ordered Newcastle Brown Ale. The other two concurred on my assessment of this beer. This was the first time I gave this one a try.
A bit of history from www.newcastle.com:
Newcastle is thought to be the first place in Britain to brew beer. In 1890 John Barras & Company purchased the Tyne Brewery and linked up with several small breweries in North Shields, Gateshead and Sunderland to form The Newcastle Breweries Ltd. Newcastle redesigned its bottle label and adopted the slogan "The One and Only during the 80s.
About this beer:
Newcastle Brown Ale brewed by Newcastle Federation Breweries, LTD, Dunston, England, imported by Stottish & Newcastle Importers Co., San Rafael, CA does have a nice label. There are facts on the label. The one I had was fact number 4: the name - a cute touch.
A blue star decorates the inside of a gold oval. We are told that the birthplace of this beer owes its name to William the Conquerers son Robert, builder of the New Castle of 1080.
The restaurant served Newcastle in 1 pint bottles. It can be purchased in bottles or cans. Youll pay about $10.00 for a 6 pack of 12 ounce bottles. The ABV (alcohol by volume) is 4.7%. The average is about 5%.
The first thing I did was to smell the beer. There was a sweet aroma to it with some essence of hops. Hops are an herb used in the case of beer in the fermenting process to give it a bitter aroma and flavor. Of course some beers use more hops than others. In my opinion Newcastle isn't very "hoppy."
Since it came in a bottle that showed a dark color and a bit of foam as I drank it I decided to pour it in a glass to see the head on it. It poured to a dark brown color with a rich, white head that stayed with the beer for a time and then leveled off to low carbonation.
The palate is light in body. It went down really easily, very smoothly with a nice aftertaste. To me it had a bit of a nutty taste. It has notes of dried citrus, grains and malts. I am really not a lover of bitter beers. Newcastle was not at all bitter in my opinion.
Newcastle is a thin, mellow beer. It went perfectly with the appetizers we were eating chicken teryaki, onion rings and coconut shrimp. The light taste made it good for foods that were very tasty since it didnt overpower the flavor of the food.
It has 150 calories in every 12 ounces. This is about average with a light beer coming in around 100 (Milwaukee's Best Light Beer) and Red Bull Malt coming in with 190 calories.
This is not a beer you are going to sip. I went through it fairly quickly. I loved Newcastle. That was the first but not the last time I will order it. We always have beer in the frig. I know well be adding Newcastle to the collection.
I know what I like and what I can drink. Newcastle is one beer without hesitation that I can recommend.
Please don't drink and drive. Please don't drink if you are pregnant or nursing. Thanks for reading. jo
Thank you to those who are helping me with my second beer review.
